A Development Journalist today reminded me of my humble beginnings at University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus.

Back in the day he was the Communications Specialist at our alma mater and he interviewed the freshly minted graduates of the postgraduate diploma in Interpreting.

The photo in his article was actually taken on our graduation day... after the ceremony we were reminiscing about the interpreting booths that gave birth to a new generation of local interpreters.

Previously T&T imported foreign trained interpreters for international meetings.

We were the guinea pigs (or fowls if you prefer).

Only three students from the cohort attended the graduation in 2007.

Fast forward almost 20 years and the two students in the photo still work the local circuit together and on occasion, we've had the opportunity to travel to work supporting multilingual meetings in Antigua, Barbados, Guyana, St. Lucia and Suriname.

It's been a long road from the "fishbowl" at UWI to much larger, much more intimidating conference rooms BUT the mission remains the same.

Bridging language barriers by interpreting the needs of our clients.

CARICOM Heads of Government met in St. Lucia last week.

On the agenda was a recurring talking point: freedom of movement!

For people and goods...

But guess what?

Sargassum seaweed didn't wait on CARICOM deliberations to move freely across our region and wash ashore in every jurisdiction.

So even as our leaders discuss how to collaborate on sargassum solutions, Interpreting Your Needs is helping to facilitate key conversations.

Au plaisir de vous servir...

Back when I lived in Guadeloupe, circa 2011-2014, je proposais mes services de communication multilingue.

I was formally registered as an "autoentrepreneur", the equivalent of a sole trader in France.

Maintenant, la technologie me permet de servir mes clients à distance, peu importe où je suis.

"Interpreting Your Needs" has been a labour of love even before the name of the business was established.
