The theme for World Metrology Day, May 20th, 2026, is:
Metrology: Building Trust in Policy Making
This yearβs theme, Metrology: Building Trust in Policy Making, speaks directly to the relationship between science, governance, and public confidence, and to the quiet work that enables decisions to be made with assurance. Reliable measurements provide the evidence policymakers depend on when addressing complex challenges β from protecting public health and ensuring safety, to managing energy systems, monitoring the environment, and supporting everyday market transactions. When data is accurate, comparable, and traceable, decisions can be taken with greater clarity and confidence.
World Metrology Day is the annual celebration of the signature of the Metre Convention on 20 May 1875 by representatives of seventeen nations. The Convention set the framework for global collaboration in the science of measurement and its industrial, commercial, and societal applications. The original aim of the Metre Convention β the worldwide uniformity of measurement β remains as important today as it was in 1875.
Metrology turns precision into progress, and as the world changes, metrology must change with it.
As we continue to push the boundaries of precision and technology, with artificial intelligence, big data, and quantum computing, measurements must be trustworthy in every sector.
Trust is strengthened further when measurements are not only scientifically sound, but also applied within clear and predictable legal frameworks.
Ultimately, metrology underpins the evidence that informs policy, the frameworks that protect society, and the systems that support economic and social stability. When measurements are reliable and consistently applied, trust extends beyond data β to the institutions, agreements, and decisions that rely on them.
In policy making, science-based measurements must be positioned to reach decision makers who can articulate them within the regulatory framework.
