It was twenty-two years ago when I started my practice in Saudi Arabia. My homeland was very different then, and at age thirty-three, against all odds, I opened my own design office. People say that your work is not your family. I beg to differ, as my work was the only guiding light when everything else had failed me; it was my lifeline. I recall not knowing what each day would bring, but I continued with much love and faith. I believe it was this unwavering belief that things would have to get better that pushed me to the limits; besides, I had nothing else to lose. Three years later, I found myself right here in the central atrium of the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA). I was too young to understand what it meant and where it would take me. I was naive but determined, ready to fight and endure, and endure I did! From my first project, I was committed and took on each challenge as if my life depended on it. It was not long until I earned credibility and, with it, the respect I yearned for. Twenty-two years later, it’s a new era for my country, and I find myself in Riyadh, at MOFA’, standing in its breathtaking central Atrium once again. This time I am older, and the leadership is younger. This time I am here to guide, lead and inspire. I can’t express the feeling of this beautiful homecoming, where I see a generation of young female designers working at MOFA. We have come a long way, and the future is bright and hopeful. I am so proud to be here, to witness this change, and be included in building a stronger future for our country. It’s good to be home!..

A belated Ramadan, Kareem, wishing you all a blessed month.
In February, I visited the Islamic Art Bienalle in Jeddah and could not wait to return to share this beautiful experience with you. My father fell seriously ill, and with it, ‘I lost and found all direction.’ I felt so much pain that nothing else mattered.
A month later, I wish to share my soul experience of this event. I visited many Islamic Art museums, exhibits, and symposiums, but this experience was like no other. Choosing the Hajj terminal as a venue for the Bienalle was ingenious. This vital structure designed by Bangladeshi / American engineer Fazlur Rahman Khan at SOM in 1974, won an Aga Khan award in architecture in 1983. The project itself speaks volumes . Having SOM return after all these years to design the galleries as a homage to its predecessors was heartfelt. Every exhibit was like coming home. It was magical, and I can not commend the artists and curators enough. I have no favorites; however, there was a unique experience I care to share with you. As I entered the ‘Makkah Pavilion.’ I was overcome with so much peace that I cried. This monolithic space showcased two majestic Abbasid columns of such immense beauty that I froze; I felt so small in their presence. How can such grandeur be so modest? Inscribed with 15 lines of Kufi script, stand 4.5 meters tall. These white Marble columns are abundantly elaborate yet stand with humility. Rooted in strict geometry, they embody just enough decoration without a millimeter of excess. It is exactly this balance of beauty and precision, aesthetic and soul, majesty and modesty that has made Islamic Art my love-line.

I am drawn to all forms of visual communication, especially ones that tell the story of the Middle East and the political turmoil we live and still endure.
“Uncertain Times” is the work of Lebanese artist and filmmaker Lamia Joreige.

Uncertain Times, is a body of work that includes the research, writing, and production of works in multiple media, is an investigation of a turning point in the history of the Middle East (1913-1920): the fall of the Ottoman Empire and overrule by the French and British mandates, in Lebanon, Syria, and Palestine in particular. The Sykes-Picot Agreement, the Balfour Declaration, the First World War, and the famine of Mount Lebanon, which caused the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people, led to a geographic, political, and social transformation of the region, the consequences of which are still momentous today.

Following her work on the history of the Lebanese Wars (1975-1990) and the post-war period in Beirut, Lamia would like to extend her reflection on historical processes to a more distant period of our history. Her research involves historical and sociological accounts, personal diaries, photographs, maps and periodicals of the time, official correspondance, and other documents from the Ottoman period presenting different points of view and personal stories about this transition. She wishes to express the tensions and anxieties, but also the expectations felt by the population of that time, how they saw their future and what they hoped for. Translated into artistic works, these stories and fragments of history might resonate with the current changes in the region; Indeed, recent upheavals, wars, and tragic events are still tearing it apart and redefining it today as they did then. The future remains uncertain..

Entrance Foyer_ Saudi Arabia Kingdom Hall at the United Nations in Geneva; we designed this space as an introduction to the main conference hall. The ceiling pendant waves and metal sculpture weave mimic the typography of Saudi Arabia’s UNESCO-inscribed mountainous terrane. The metal weave sculpture also acts as a divider creating two separate entrances when the main conference hall has two different sessions made possible through a sky fold. The entrance foyer also has multiple media displays on either side. To the right, the media display will play documentaries on Saudi Arabia’s Future projects. On the left, the media display will run documentaries on ancient sites inscribed with UNESCO...

Then there are projects where the suffering is worth it. This project deserves a whole program on its own. In this project, I finally found my voice. This project both broke me and built my confidence. This project opened doors for and the desire to share its process. By November, I am launching my Mentorship program for select designers. I will take you on an intimate journey of self and finding your voice as a designer. There is no looking back from there!..

“Courage is fear that has said it’s prayers” _Dorothy Bernard

There is no one fearless among us, and dark moments hide in corners to creep up on us when we are at our weakest. We must trust that there is a greater power watching over us with much love.
“ Love will sustain you when passions path takes unexpected twists and turns. Love will dissolve your fears by creating opportunities you couldn’t have imagined before you began the search to discover and recover your authentic self. And when doubt, despair, abd denial threaten to dismantle your dreams, Love will rear up in your defence.”
“I have come to the realization that feeling afraid is God’s signal to ask for grace and Power.” “Dreams are gifts of God meant to alter us. Trust that the same Power that gifted you with your dream knows how to help you make it come true.”...

I recently met this superwoman and had a heartfelt two-hour talk with her over zoom. Diana’s incredible school project is a wake-up call and reminder of the core purpose of our profession as designers; to create positive change and uplift the lives of others. When I first saw her project, I cried with joy and knew that this work needs to be supported to resonate and grow to help other less fortunate children with a chance at a better life.

Set amid the Thar Desert near Jaisalmer in the western Indian state of Rajasthan, the recently completed Rajkumari Ratnavati Girl’s School is a model of sustainability and community development. Designed pro bono by New York-based architect , the oval-shaped building was built by local craftspeople using local materials and techniques, a concept that extends from the school’s bespoke furniture, which were hand-crafted out of rosewood with classic Charpai woven seating, through to the girls’ uniforms. Designed by famed Indian fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee (), the uniforms are made with Ajrak, a traditional textile that is block-printed with natural dyes using a technique that predates modern history.

Many artists feel they’ll be “found out,” sooner or later_ probably sooner. For when we create, although we know that a Higher Power works with us and through us, the Work comes into the world with our name on it. This is the artist’s struggle. If we don’t create, we s***f out the Divine Spark. If we do create, we feel we’re showing a false face to the world because we know we didn’t do it alone, even if nobody else does.
But the struggle and the scam stop once we cease denying our talent and become willing to own it— humbly, gratefully, and respectfully — and then share it with the world. As Long as we’re not exploiting our gifts only for our own good, we’re covered.
Many of us squander precious natural resources — time, creative energy, emotion — comparing the size of our talents to those of others. Today ask Spirit to call forth your authentic gifts, so that you might know know them, acknowledge them, and own them. Do you want to live more abundantly? Have you buried your talents? How can we live richer, deeper, and more passionately if we aren’t willing to invest in ourselves? Many of us have played it safe for too long and wonder why we are miserable.
Playing it safe is the riskiest choice we can ever make . _ Sarah Ban Breathnach ..
