Finca Nejapa Tablón Roma - Red Caturra
Caturra is a dwarf mutation from the esteemed Bourbon, discovered in Minas Gerais, Brazil somewhere between 1915 and 1918. Around the 1930’s a mass selection process was carried by the IAC in Campinas, Brazil, however this variety was never popular in Brazil, but rather became one of the most popular varieties in most of the other Latin American countries.
Caturra is different to Bourbon just because of one single gene, the dominant Ct allele, similar case to what happened in El Salvador with the Pacas variety in 1949 and with the Villa Sarchi in Costa Rica variety in 1920.
Coffee from this same tablón was the first Caturra variety to win a Cup of Excellence award in El Salvador back in 2009 among a sea of Bourbon and Pacamaras
