Introducing: Into Freshwater

It’s been a while since I designed an entire room, so I’m really excited to finally share this one 🥹

Last week, I visited my friend’s art exhibit and one question immediately came to mind:

Can a single piece of art inspire an entire bedroom?

That question became the starting point for this project.

Into Freshwater is a bedroom designed for a 14-year-old, inspired by the Crappie Gyotaku artwork of Eastern Shore Gyotaku

Rather than creating a fishing-themed room, I aimed to translate the feeling behind the artwork into the space itself.

Every design decision—from the color palette and materials to the textures and details—was inspired by the freshwater landscape.

Personal touches were then added to reflect the teenager who would call this room his own ✨

I love how this design came to life 🤩. A room can be more than just aesthetics… it can tell a story!

Did I learn about aquatic plants?

Yes, and I learned something even more valuable. 🌿

New vocabulary. Plant names I’d never heard before (in English). Measurements in inches (still doing the math 😅). Technical concepts. A whole new way of understanding design.

That’s part of building my design business in a new country.

Design isn’t just about choosing colors, furniture, or beautiful details. It’s about understanding the environment, how people live, the materials they use, and the spaces they need.

It’s definitely a process, and I can’t wait to keep learning.

Que si aprendí de plantas acuáticas?!

Sí, algo! Pero terminé aprendiendo algo más valioso!

Vocabulario nuevo. Nombres de plantas que nunca había escuchado en inglés. Medidas en pulgadas (me distraje haciendo las conversiones). Conceptos técnicos. Y una nueva forma de ver el diseño.

Esto es parte de construir mi negocio de diseño en otro país 😮‍💨

Porque no es solo escoger colores, muebles o detalles bonitos. Es entender el entorno, cómo viven las personas, los materiales que utilizan y los espacios que necesitan… envueltos en una cultura diferente.

Definitivamente es un proceso y quiero seguir aprendiendo 🤩
