"Nicholas Brumder's design is unlike anything seen previously in New Zealand. The 7.5 metre tall sculpture takes its cues from the five sided columnar basalt of the region and the ‘T’ insignia of overseas tunnelling units. This is topped by a globe which echoes the Tunnellers motto Inga Wahi Katoa – Everywhere, and a final shape that has been interpreted by many as a pair of hands open in supplication."

As we head towards the April Anzac Day commemorations a number of events relating to the Tunnellers’ story will be taking place.

One very special event will take place at the Waihi Gilmour Lake site where the Tunnelling Company memorial will be dedicated in March next year.

On Wednesday 22 April 2015 the Arras Mayoral Delegation will be in Waihi. We are honoured to have the opportunity to welcome Arras Mayor M. Frédéric Leturque and his party to our district and the home of the NZ Tunnelling Company Memorial. The mayoral party will include our good friends Christophe Serieys and Isabelle Pilarowski.

A NZETC Memorial Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony (Mauri Kōhatu – Taumata atua) is planned for the occasion of their visit. You are all invited to attend. We know the Arras delegation is looking forward to meeting Tun Coy family members and all those who share a link to the Tunnellers’ story.

Arras will be bringing with them a flint stone taken from the area the Tunnellers worked while in France. This will join a large host rock taken from the veins of a Waihi mine where many of the Tunnellers worked prior to going overseas. We would like to think that the area where the Tunnelling Company Memorial is being installed, an area called the Miners' Reflective Area (MRA), will be a place to help strengthen and bring wellness to those who visit.
