I've been busy doing some volunteer work for DoC on Kawau Island, repairing some broken windows and teaching DoC staff and other volunteers how to look after antique furniture and other wooden finishes. Some days it's a bit tough with the location, but I think I'll manage.

You know those Bunnings butcher block bench tops, well I got one and joined them together to make a table top. I recoloured it and finished it with varnish and my wax . It came out better than I thought. The wax made the big difference as the top feels like silk. The wax is available through burrwood51.felt.co.nz or from From Hair to Puhoi.

This table is a Northern grown Ash slab hall table made out of 2 small slabs. It's finished with oil and varnish and a couple of coats of my own wax. The wax gives the finish a silky smooth finish and makes it easy to maintain. I've been making and using this wax for a long time and have used it on antiques to slab furniture. Most people don't know that during part of my apprenticeship as a furniture maker we learnt about the restoration of older pieces. That was back in the late 80s. I have restored pieces all over the country and some are on display in historic houses and museums. The ones I get the most joy out of are the family hand me downs. The one people tell me it was Grandma's dresser or my Grandparents dining table. You see good furniture lasts and lasts. Made out decent and timber and crafted to last,but 9 times out of 10 when the piece is to be restored it hasn't had any love for some time. That's the best part of furniture restoration is repairing it back to new so it will last another generation. Here's a few I have done. Contact Dave 0274489061.
