For our final instalment of the Meet Max series, Max speaks from the heart about his passion for crafting the Greenland Paddle and how he became inspired to create a livelihood from this passion...

Once I was told by someone who made Greenland Paddles to give it a go myself, I set about researching.

By using online resources I taught myself to shape a paddle from Cedar wood and tried it out. I didn't find it easy and I was not sure if I was a fan of the technique so the paddle sat in the corner of the workshop for around a month.

But after a chat with a fellow kayaker who gave me a push to give it another go I dusted it off and decided to re-work it.
I refined it and made it lighter and that was the paddle that became known as 'Milly.' It worked perfectly when I finally learnt how to use the technique needed for a Greenland Paddle.
I had been so use to shoulder pain from my usual kayaking with a Euro style paddle. But with the paddle I made and named 'Milly,' I could paddle all day without pain.

I ended up moving into the perfect premise just at a time I needed a new home. I ended up with one that had a workshop down below as a bonus. There was even wood working machinery I could use. 7 years later I still call this place home and craft all my paddles in the workshop.

I had an inspiration to work with crafting paddles instead of kayaks and I put my heart and soul into each and every paddle I made.
When I hand over one of my paddles I feel proud of what I have produced - I don't hand one over until I am completely happy with it. And I really love being able to show people how to use their paddle on the water. Technique is really important and it takes time to get use to this....

To me, this work is in harmony with the creator an the Universal Laws of nature. The materials I use are of the natural world and so using one of my paddles means it is a 'soul friendly,' product - leading to engagement with nature.

In this weeks final Technique Thursday we discover my unique technique for finishing a Max Love Greenland Paddle - the secret is in the rub!

Aftercare of your Max Love Greenland Paddle:

The Tung oil finish is incredibly durable and flexible and will not crack or peel.
Therefore it does not need maintaining. Most customers ask me how do they maintain their paddle and I tell them you don't need to.

Just make sure you wash the paddle after every use with a car wash and wax formula
and the finish will last indefinitely.

My own paddle is now 7 yrs old and the Tung Oil coating is as good as when I first applied
it and still as smooth, and it still has that beautiful sheen.....
