Dem been wan use my head yesterday. 😅
On Thursday, someone chatted me up. I wasn’t online, so he called instead. When I picked it up, he said he had already sent me messages on WhatsApp.
I went online to check, and he had screenshotted a video from my TT, asking for the pr!ce of a foam.
We had a brief discussion, and throughout, he kept insisting he needed the mattress urgently. It was a 4x6, 8-inch naked foam with a cover.
He was in Calabar and he was telling me it was urgent.
First red flag.
I told him to be patient since the day was already far gone, and I would call him the next day (Friday) so we could arrange properly.
Early Friday morning, he called again. I was still at home, but because of how “urgent” he sounded, I quickly prepared and went to the shop earlier than planned.
At the shop, we had a video call. I showed him the mattress, and he liked it.
Now here’s the arrangement.
For deliveries outside Uyo, the buyer is meant to sponsor transportation. So we agreed he would send N3,000 for me to take it to Urua Ikpa (Calabar-Itu Road park). When I got there, I would call the driver so he could confirm I arrived with the mattress. Then he would negotiate transport with the driver and make full payment for the mattress.
Second red flag.
Normally, I collect full payment before any mattress leaves our shop. But he said he had trust issues, and against my better judgment, I went ahead.
He sent the N3,000.
By 11:04am, I was already at the park. I handed the mattress to a driver, called him, and he agreed on the transport fare to Calabar.
Then it was time for payment so I could head back.
Instead of pay!ng, he sent N20,000 and started pleading that I should be patient, saying he had exceeded his daily transfer limit and needed to upgrade his account before sending the balance.
Third red flag.
I waited.
And waited.
And waited.
By 12:00pm, I had already spent about an hour at the park. He kept apologising and assuring me the m0ney was coming.
By 12:30pm, he sent a voice note telling me I should leave the mattress with the driver and go back to the shop, and that I would surely get my balance soon.
That was when I understood what was going on.
I simply smiled and told him I was not leaving my mattress with any driver without full payment. I was taking it back to the shop.
He started explaining, insisting he was serious and had already sent money to show commitment.
In conclusion, I took my mattress back to the shop. His N20,000 is still in my account.
I told him that whenever he is ready, he will have to complete the payment and also add an extra N3,000 for the inconvenience before I move it again.
Lesson learned: never ignore red flags, no matter how “urgent” the customer sounds.
How long have I been in Uyo wey dem wan use my head?
