ANNUAL ENLIGHTENMENT ON FASTING METABOLISM AND MEAT QUALITY.

Fasting Your Sacrifice Animals Before Slaughter

Fasting is a technical term which refers to the withdrawal of feed from an animal, to be sacrificed prior to slaughter.

The benefit of this practice during the conversion of muscle to meat include:

✅ It reduces the volume of rumen liquor and other gut (digestive tract) contents.

✅ It maximally reduces the gut bacteria load and therefore reduces the risk of carcass (meat) contamination, during dressing.

✅ It improves the general meat quality parameters.

It is usually sufficient for the animals to receive their last feed about 12-24hrs prior to slaughter.

During the fasting period, the animal should be provided an ad libitum (unrestricted) access to water.
