Proyecto Laguna de Sánchez

Proyecto Laguna de Sánchez Caving project in the Cumbres de Monterrey, in the states of Nuevo León and Coahuila. We have been visiting the area around Laguna de Sanchez (LdeS) since 1997.

We actively work with locals to find, explore, and document the caves in the area. Our work has included, but is not limited to ridgewalking, digging, mapping, biological inventory, geological observations, and public outreach and education. We gladly share our data with the local community to better help them manage their karst resources, and will happily support other research and sustainable ec

otourism efforts.

Here is a short video showing the expansive growth of Monterrey since 1985. North is to the right, and LdeS is off to the left and not in the view. Thanks to Don Arburn for finding this.

We made it to the new spring today. Water just flows out from holes in a small travertine deposit. No humanly passable entrance. So all my cave diver friends can stand down.

The next trip is coming up soon! 15-21 March 2025. We'll be staying in the field house, so no need to bring camping gear. Two big obvious cliffside entrances to access. One, the locals say was mined for guano, and the other mined for "crystals". Should be pretty interesting to map! We will also be helping some college biology students studying the bats in the caves. Bring vert gear, and let us know soon if you are coming so we can arrange rides and drivers.

Photo of nearby mountain cliff face to grab your attention. Not the actual cliff face in question, but similar.

We have two upcoming trips this year. The first, 1-10 August, is being billed as the "Old Farts Trip.' Note that you do not have to be old, nor do you have to fart. What we mean by this is that we just plan to take it pretty easy this time. There are roads and trails to explore, food to eat, drinks to be consumed, and stories and lies to be told. We'll have a couple of movie nights, I'm sure, as well as stargazing and some card games. In case you were worried, we do have a couple of objective caves to survey. All skill levels are welcome, and you can commit to only part of the trip if you don't have that much vacation.
The second trip is thanksgiving week, 23-30 November. This trip will be a bit more ambitious, primarily focusing on the caving and only secondarily on goofing off during a rest day or two, We are getting closer and closer to having the material needed for a new AMCS Bulletin, but still have some mapping to do.
As usual, if you have questions, go to LagunaCaves.com first. If you still have questions, post them here or message us directly. We won't find any long or deep caves, but there are plenty of new caves in the area that still need documentation. Trips are not hard-core expeditions, but rather "Expedition Lite" and rather fun. Hope to see you all there one day!

TCR 2023 is in the books, so now it is time to ramp up planning for the upcoming LdeS exped! Who is in? We already have John King and Val Yerby and Hector Mejia and Thomas Sitch on the list. Who am I missing? To date, in 20 previous expeditions, we have had 131 participants. 26 have made multiple trips. On this trip, we are camping out for at least four nights, and exploring more of the distant Cugohón area, with many new caves yet to be discovered and documented. For general details, go to LagunaCaves.com, especially the FAQ page. We are leaving in less than three weeks! It's going to be grand!

Proyecto Laguna de Sánchez Our Mission The mission of Proyecto Laguna de Sanchez is to find, catalog, explore, and map caves around Ejido Laguna de Sanchez, Nuevo León. There are six main cave areas: Mesa del Barro, Llano Grande, Mesa Colorada, La Camotera, Mesa Seca, and Cugohón, with a scatteri...

Exciting news! First, check out our new website, lagunacaves.com. It has a lot of the content of the old site plus some new features, but is still a work in progress.

Second, we have rescheduled the summer trip! Expedition #21 will take place 22-29 July 2023. Escape to the high country with us to avoid the heat of summer! We still have many objectives yet to accomplish, and will tailor the trip to the number and abilities of the participants. But as always, it definitely helps if you have prior vertical and surveying experience. Let me (Crash) know (by PM, text, or email) if you want to be on the list. And make sure your passport is current!
