As you can see, landing page with an attractive background banner looks nice. From testing result from Usability Hub, it is now clear that users want to get entertain and enjoy while trying to solve their problems.

Getting user's attention is not easy especially in competitive businesses but if you blend your UX with perfect photography it all becomes easier than ever.

I would recommend to get the most relevant photo.
Don't just get a stock image anyhow.

80s UI to 21st UI -- Redesigning 80s Desktop Application

BACKGROUND

I saw this contest which is to redesign POS User Interface. It was only 2 days left. There were 6 screens needed to redesign. Due to time constraint, I chose 1 screen, Menu screen which the contest holder was looking for the most. Goal of the screen is to place an order which is the ultimate goal of the system.

CHALLENGE

To redesign the 80s system so that it is functionally intuitive, modern and attractive.

RESEARCH
So, I started my Saturday doing user research at Orchard, Singapore, a nice place to visit and also have a lots of cafes and restaurants. I observed waiters/cashiers placing an order using POS and cashiers making the bill/receiving payment.

Restaurants —There are two scenarios here: one with iPad application at the customer table and one which does not. In the second scenario, waiters have to write down the order first before placing an order into the system. Waiters have to go back and forth to place an order if one of the item is not available. Usually, a touch screen computer, is placed somewhere, away from tables.

Cafes and small food shops — cashiers are the one who places an order and receives the payment. This one is quite straight forward. Anything is not available, customers are informed or if customers want to change their order, they can ask cashiers directly.

Conceptual models for Actions and Menu Items.

PAPER PROTOTYPE

With all design ideas, UIs and IA, it is time to prototype. To make it fast, I made a paper prototype to validate the interface with the users.

TESTING

Objective —Validate new interface while user place an order for a customer at the cash counter.

Target User — Cashier (Woman), age 20–39. Based on the observation done at Orchard, Singapore.

Scenario — You are a cashier working at a local cafe. A customer is in front of you to order food. Use the Menu Screen to place an order.

I was acting as a customer :). I started with drink, ordered 2 latte, 1 chicken bu**er and asked what kinds of Fries the cafe has. And at last, asked her to change latte with cappuccino.

Findings — remove item was hidden under the order items which user were not able to find. Instead, they clicked the red button, right bottom of the screen, to clear all items and restarted the order process again.

Improvement — changed red dustbin button to “Clear All”. Added remove button for individual order item.
