Does it surprise you that psych3delics are being proposed to HELP rather than HARM one’s wellbeing?
I vividly remember stating as a child that I would not do drugs.. except that I would like to try magic mushrooms.
Where this confidence came from I’m not sure (perhaps thank The Beatles), but it was not with therapeutic intention.
And ironically, before I was 18 I was receiving commonly prescribed antidepressant drugs, SSRIs.
I was advised that, as I was already experiencing an intangible grief and emotional fragility regarded as psychiatric diagnoses, that I ought avoid psych3delic compounds.
So imagine my surprise to find that my comfort in mushroom induced-states seemed to be greater than that of my companion’s, who would be considered mentally stable, diagnosis free…
…and the profoundly therapeutic effects that psilocybin (a key component of magic mushrooms) educed within me. *especially* when I’ve been stuck in a loop.
And hence I find myself now applied to the mission of revolution within this field of psychiatry, currently in getting research findings to those who seek a shift, or to challenge what healing with pshychiatry can look like.
This article by Leigh Bergin outlines what clinical data and naturalistic studies have identified regarding the psychological safety of psilocybin.
Please do consider the nuances of data collected in such settings, and the unique nature of each of our experiences, and how this is reflected in how psilocybin would interact with us.
