Spring brings new beginnings and, of course, a new collection.
The 'My Sandbox' collection is inspired by a conversation early in my career when I was a designer at Lainages Victor in Québec (now Duvaltex).
Mel Schierman, who led research and development, told me it was his job to design the sandbox for the designers to play in it.
At the time, I misunderstood the comment and was insulted, but I later in life realized that he meant it was his responsibility to take care of the technical difficulties so we could design freely. So this collection is a tribute to Mel.
For 'My Sandbox' I set a few simple rules: work abstractly, use collage, and keep the approach playful without pre-planning the repeat structures.
For this, I am painting papers, cutting up shapes, and creating temporary collages that I photograph. The shapes are stored in the box and each day I bring them out to play.
