At Carnatic Cafe, HQ27, Gurugram, (), the base of each column is shaped as a carved granite vessel, drawing from the forms of everyday cookware found in South Indian homes.

The gesture connects back to the ethos of home-style dining, where food is generous, communal, and rooted in routine.

In this moment, structure bridges the gap between scale and sense of familiarity. A detail that quietly holds the project’s larger idea.

From drawing to making, where does design truly take shape?

At Carnatic Cafe, HQ27, Gurugram, (), joineries drive how the space is built and understood. Each connection is developed as a system.

Details are developed in response to the material and the way it is worked, ensuring the joints feel integrated.

The elephant emblem, at the facade, is sculpted as a layered stone form. Substantial in weight and presence, it anchors the cafe’s identity while remaining part of the same crafted vocabulary.

The transition from sketch to site is not linear; it is a process in which the final detail carries together the intent of the drawing and the reality of construction.

Can patterns underfoot become a form of storytelling?

Drawing inspiration from Indian stories and everyday symbolism, a carpet of engraved emblems, fish, turtle, snail, sun, and moon, sets the tone at the threshold of Carnatic Cafe, HQ27, Gurugram, ().

The turtle and snail, central to the brand’s narrative, speak of patience and longevity. These are subtly embedded into the floor, becoming part of how the space is entered and moved through.

A cultural expression through materiality.

The palette remains rooted in Indian materials, stone, veneer, copper, lime, and rice paint. At the reception, surfaces are left raw and uncoated. Stone carries its grain and variation. The counter is clad in copper that responds to light and touch, gradually changing through the day and over time.

A minimal yet culturally rich palette is brought together through processes that highlight its inherent qualities.

As you move through Carnatic Cafe HQ 27, Gurugram, (), the vaults organise the entire experience.

The vaults appear massive and monolithic, lending the space an almost archaeological depth. The grid was reworked to achieve a sense of balance and alignment. Their springing points are controlled to keep the space open and allow both volume and seating to coexist.

A grid that brings clarity to complexity.

The Carnatic Cafe’s HQ27, Gurugram () spatial identity rests on a twelve-pillar grid that generates 6 full vaults and 10 half-vaults. This brings clarity to an otherwise irregular shell. It is a framework that defines how the space is navigated.

What holds the cafe together is not enclosure, but alignment. Each element, structural or spatial, follows a shared logic.

In a marketplace crowded with carved wood and ornamental excess, Carnatic Cafe, HQ27, Gurugram, (Carnatic Cafe) takes a slower route. The space draws its strength from restraint. A palette of sand and peach tones keeps the atmosphere balanced and calm.

The space sits between opposites, new yet familiar, public yet personal. It builds presence through consistency and care.

The interior’s tactile story at Carnatic Cafe, HQ27, Gurugram, (Carnatic Cafe) unfolds through stone, honest, local, and unpolished. Tabletops in white Indian stone with soft green speckles extend the material language across touchpoints, grounding every interaction in quiet tactility.

Material becomes the medium through which the space is felt.

Translating kolam into experience, beyond pattern.

Drawn as a traditional South Indian practice, Kolam is reinterpreted as part of the movement at Carnatic Cafe, HQ27, Gurugram (Carnatic Cafe). Rice-paint impressions pressed into the dado, and turtle and snail forms carved in low relief, translate the same threshold logic.

Craft here isn’t a finish. It’s the first language the space speaks.
