Technical Detail

Internal linking is one of the most overlooked SEO wins.

Most websites either:

- Don’t link between pages at all, or
- Just throw in random “click here” links

Both are a waste.

If you have a service page for “Web Design Galway”, and a blog post about website performance, those pages should be linking to each other properly.

Not just linking, but linking with meaning.

For example:
“improving your website speed in Galway” is far more useful than “click here”.

It tells Google what the page is about.
It also helps visitors move through your site naturally.

You don’t need hundreds of backlinks to improve rankings.
Sometimes you just need to use the pages you already have properly.

Simple, but very few websites actually do it well.

Industry Insight

There’s a big difference between a website that looks good and one that actually brings in business.

I’ve seen plenty of beautifully designed websites that never generate a single enquiry.

Why?

Because they focus on appearance instead of intent.

A business website needs to answer three questions immediately:

- What do you do?
- Where do you do it?
- Why should I trust you?

If any of that isn’t obvious within a few seconds, the design doesn’t matter.

Nice visuals might impress other designers.
Clear messaging is what gets you enquiries.

If your site isn’t converting, don’t ask “does it look good?”

Ask “does it make sense?”

Technical Reality

A slow website isn’t always caused by “too many images”.

That’s what most people assume, but it’s often not the real issue.

More often, it’s:

- Too many plugins loading unnecessary scripts
- Poor hosting struggling under basic load
- Multiple fonts and external requests
- Page builders loading everything whether it’s used or not

I’ve seen sites with very few images still take 6+ seconds to load because of this.

And the opposite, image-heavy sites that load quickly because everything else is properly set up.

If your site is slow, don’t guess. Test it properly.

Look at what’s actually loading, not just what’s visible.

Speed problems are usually technical, not visual.

Reality Check

Not every website needs to be “clever”.

There’s a temptation to try something different, unusual layouts, creative navigation, fancy effects. It can look impressive, but it often comes at a cost.

People don’t visit your website to admire it. They visit it to get something done.

If they have to figure out how your site works, you’ve already lost them.

The best-performing websites tend to follow familiar patterns:

- Logo top left
- Navigation across the top
- Clear sections
- Obvious buttons

It might feel a bit standard, but that’s the point. People already know how to use it.

Creativity has its place, but not at the expense of usability.

If your site is “different”, make sure it’s still easy.

Common Mistake

A lot of business websites try to say too much.

You land on the homepage and you’re hit with:

- Multiple services
- Long paragraphs
- Sliders with different messages
- Competing calls-to-action

The result is confusion.

Most visitors aren’t reading your site in detail. They’re scanning. If they can’t quickly understand what you do and what they should do next, they move on.

A simpler approach works better:

- One clear main message
- One primary call-to-action
- Supporting information underneath

You can still include everything, just structure it properly.

Clarity wins. Every time.

Observation

A surprising number of business websites still don’t show a phone number clearly.

Not hidden in the footer, not buried on a contact page, actually visible.

There are plenty of people who don’t want to fill out a form. If they’re ready to make a call, you want to make that as easy as possible.

Especially on mobile:

- Your phone number should be visible immediately
- It should be clickable
A simple change, but it can increase enquiries more than most people expect.

If someone has to go looking for your number, you’re adding unnecessary friction.

And when people hit friction online, they don’t push through it. They go elsewhere.

Simple change, but it can increase enquiries more than most people expect.

Simple Fix

If your website feels slow to you, it’s even slower to everyone else.

People often get used to their own site because they’ve seen it dozens of times. Their browser has parts of it cached, they’re on a good connection, and they know where everything is.

A new visitor has none of that.

They’re seeing your site for the first time, on whatever connection they happen to have, usually on a phone.

If it takes more than a couple of seconds to load, you’ve already lost some of them.

Common causes:

- Oversized images
- Too many plugins
- Poor hosting
Speed isn’t just a technical metric; it directly affects how many people stay on your site and actually contact you.

You don’t need anything fancy to fix most of this. Just proper optimisation and a bit of attention to detail.

Speed isn’t just a technical metric, it directly affects how many people stay on your site and actually contact you.

Quick Check

Here’s something worth doing today: Google your own business and look at your listing properly.

Not just your website, look at everything that appears:

- Your Google Business Profile
- Reviews
- Photos
- The page title and meta description
- Any other listings that show up

Ask yourself honestly, if you were a customer seeing this for the first time, would you choose your business?

- I regularly see businesses with:
- Outdated or no photos
- Very few reviews, or none at all
- Old opening hours
- Poor or missing descriptions

That’s often the first impression people get before they even click onto your website.

Your website matters, but so does everything around it.

If your search results don’t inspire confidence, you’re losing enquiries before your site even has a chance.

Real-World Observation

A business owner told me recently, “I get plenty of traffic, but no enquiries.”

That usually points to one thing: the website isn’t converting.

Traffic on its own means very little. If the people landing on your site aren’t taking action, something is off.

- Common issues I see:
- No clear call-to-action
- Weak or generic messaging
- Slow load times
- Poor mobile experience

Lack of trust signals (reviews, real photos, clear contact details)

People don’t enquire just because they found your site. They enquire when they trust you and when the next step is obvious.

A well-built website should guide visitors towards action without them having to think about it.

If you’re getting traffic but no leads, don’t focus on getting more traffic yet. Fix what happens after people arrive.

Technical Insight

A lot of business websites look fine at a glance, but fall apart the second you try to use them properly.

Test this on your own site: try to complete one simple action as if you were a new visitor. Send an enquiry, find a phone number, check a service.

If you have to think about it, search around, or click more than once or twice, there’s a problem.

Good websites guide people without them noticing. The next step should always feel obvious.

Bad ones make people work for it, and people don’t work for websites. They leave.

Navigation, layout, and structure matter just as much as design. A clean-looking site that’s awkward to use will still lose business.

If you’re not sure how your site performs, ask someone who’s never seen it before to try using it. You’ll learn more in five minutes than you will staring at it yourself for a week.
