🐮✨ We have two very special new arrivals at Newbridge Farm!

We are delighted to welcome two beautiful Bó Riabhach calves to the farm, one of Ireland’s oldest and most endangered native cattle breeds 🇮🇪

The Bó Riabhach is a critically endangered, ancient native Irish breed of cattle famed for its distinctive brindled coat and deep roots in Gaelic folklore.

➡️ Characteristics and Appearance:
- Coat: Typically red to brown with striking black brindle stripes and small white patches.
- Size: Fully grown cows stand around 135–140 cm tall and are robust in structure.
- Traits: Known as excellent milkers and a hardy, traditional type.

➡️ The “Borrowing Days” Folklore
The breed is central to the traditional Gaelic concept of Laethanta na Bó Riabhaí (The Days of the Brindled Cow), also known as the “Borrowing Days” (Laethanta na Ciorra).

✨ The Tale: Legend says an old brindle cow boasted that March’s harshest weather could not kill her. Angered, the month of March borrowed three days from April to unleash a final fierce spell of cold and snow, which famously “skinned” or challenged the boastful cow.

➡️ History and Conservation
- Early Mentions: The Bó Riabhach is referenced in Middle Irish texts dating from 800 A.D. to 1200 A.D.
- Revival: Numbers dwindled drastically over the centuries, dropping to critically low numbers (fewer than 50 to 70 remaining animals). Dedicated conservationists, breeders, and the Bó Riabhach Cattle Society have worked to safeguard the genetic line through genomic analysis and coordinated breeding.

We are so happy to be playing a small part in their story❤️

Come and say hello to our newest residents on your next visit to Newbridge Farm! 🐮🌿

This fully illustrated catalogue, presents for the first time a comprehensive overview of the 300 paintings, detailing artists and subjects, and where known, provenance. The catalogue is preceded by an essay which explores the history of the collection of paintings preserved at Newbridge charting the Cobbe family’s collecting interests beginning with Thomas and Lady Betty Cobbe in the eighteenth century who were richly aided by local cleric Rev. Matthew Pilkington.

Looking at the rich interior decorative schemes contrived to best show-off the paintings it explores the subsequent fate of the collection. Drawing throughout on archival sources, the story of the survival of the collection is followed by a look at the craftsmanship and authorship of the historic frames around the pictures.

The catalogue includes old masters, landscapes, portraits, engravings, photographic portraits and a selection of artworks by members of the Cobbe family, all displayed at Newbridge House.
