ACRE stands for A Community Rethinking its Environment. The project began in 2008 with the suggestion of an eco-friendly community garden centre and programme for the development and welfare of people of the area, especially young people with learning and social disadvantage. This was based on experiences with the Resource Department in Salesian College, Celbridge, and has been heightened by more
recent interaction with various local community groups. Phase One of the Project is complete and has provided:
External beds for growing vegetables, flowers and fruit crops. Resource building No. 1 with social and training and other facilities. Site services, including rainwater harvesting and geothermal exchange. Phase Two is also complete and includes the provision of a second building, poly-tunnels, wind turbine, security fencing,and sensory garden landscaping. The Project's main objectives include making a positive contribution to the local community, creating a space for the community to meet and engage with the environment and promoting the community and social development of our area.
