My new workbench, it’s not perfect but it will do the job. Sapale top and sycamore base with pop up dogs and tail vise. I’ll add a leg vise in the future.

Designers call it affordance — when an object’s form invites you to interact with it. But with wood, it feels deeper. It’s a kind of haptic pull — an instinct to connect with something real. Studies even show that touching real wood calms the brain, activates the parasympathetic nervous system, and literally makes you more relaxed.
In this video, I’m asking one simple question: can we build something that creates that same feeling? Join me as I craft a coffee table from spalted beech and walnut, exploring how form, proportion, and texture come together to create a piece that draws you in — and why some materials (like epoxy) simply can’t replicate that pull.
This isn’t just a build — it’s an exploration of why certain pieces of furniture feel alive, and what makes us want to touch them.
