Hey all! Remember me? The furniture guy?

I keep telling myself I'll catch you all up on 𝓔ₚ-shaped news via a 'megapost' one day, but I've kind of been a trifle busy working on *this* monster over recent months. Don't worry tho, you've not missed much. I keep telling myself this is the calm before the storm, so if you've been thinking of asking me to create a piece of furniture art for you, now would be a great time before the diary starts getting booked up again. 🙂 Anyway, so what have we got here...?

I've had this Nathan 'Squares' sideboard in the workshop for years - YEARS - and never quite knew what to do with it. It's common to find them painted, or decoupaged which has never really excited me. But I decided to dive in and tackle it (mainly because it was the most accessible piece in the workshop!). What to do? Well, those frames on the doors? They look like picture frames to me. That got me thinking about applying individual 'artworks' to each frame which, when displayed together, would form a 'panoramic' artwork that stretches along the front of the piece. Abstractism (sic) felt like the perfect vibe since it's synonymous with the mid-century aesthetic, so I came up with an abstractistic (sic) take on my Art Deco designs that you'll have seen grace my Beautility cocktail cabinets.... Perfect. This finally felt so... right. Everything flowing together - form and function.

You'll know the drill by now; days of stripping, repair, re-profiling, design, experimentation, review, swearing, taping, and application of the tinted wood oils and brass enamel paint followed. Internally, I went for a clean, flat, dark blue/teal leatherette lining to the cabinet sides, with contrasting timber shelves, and glazing to each base for added protection (see, I really think about this stuff), then mounted an angled LED strip light - controllable via motion or a cute little remote control - to the inside of the central cabinet with Formica drop-down serving section. Bang; you've got yourself a sideboard + cocktail cabinet. What's not to love? Each drawer is solid wood, clean, grainy, and wonderful, with my little wax seal (sorry, John) applied to prove you own a one-off piece of bespoke Eclectica art.

The delight of tightening that final screw, and standing back to see how this finally came together after so much head-scratching is unlike anything else in life. Satisfaction, guaranteed.

Hello followers!

It’s been a while. There’s no real reason why I’ve neglected my posting duties on here recently other than, well, life happening. Summer hols, kids, family, fun. But I’m back in the saddle now. What have I missed? Everyone ok?

I did attempt to post this the other day, but it turns out posting a video to Facebook isn’t as easy as I remember it being! So let’s try this again…

It’s not often I find myself in *front* of the camera. But when a pro filmmaker (who happens to be your cousin) offers to create a short-film that carefully articulates exactly what I’m trying to achieve here at Eclectica Projects without peeling away too much of the artistic mystery that is important to retain, it’s impossible to decline.

So here, in all its chromatic glory, is 2 minutes and 15 seconds inside the mind of a furniture artist. If nothing else, it expertly frames my obsession with order and detail, and the lineage between musical structure and artistic design that directly impacts my creations.

I hope you like it. And if you’ve ever thought of inviting someone to carefully nurture your creativity into a short-film format, then Katie Vandyck is your friend. Her encouraging nature is bountiful, and she has the patience of a saint!

🌊‘𝓦𝓲𝓵𝓼𝓸𝓷’🌊

Oh boy. What a week.

We sadly lost Sly Stone a couple of days ago, then just yesterday, Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. Two culturally significant musical Goliaths renowned for their experimental approach to songwriting, laden with hooks, groove, and timeless lyrics. I mean, imagine releasing an album with the US flag splayed across its cover entitled ‘There’s A Riot Goin’ On’ at the height of the civil rights movement in 1971, only for its politically-charged themes to still resonate so loudly today… Literally ‘today’. Their legacies will live on in the music they leave behind for evermore. There’s not anything particularly ‘Brian Wilson’ about this sideboard, except for the fact that both were popular in the 60’s. But it feels apt to name this piece ‘𝓦𝓲𝓵𝓼𝓸𝓷’ in tribute, however underwhelming a tribute it may be.

Now I’m not naive enough to try and compare my meagre artistic exploits to Sly and Brian’s in any way, but I’m determined to keep beautiful mid-century furniture alive 50+ years later, in a similar way to how their music continues to move people over half a century on. So it’s with great pleasure that I share my latest effort in my pursuit of saving vintage furniture from a fate worse than death/the skip; this ‘Librenza’ sideboard, designed by E.Gomme for G-Plan, in Tola and brass, painstakingly refinished to resemble something close to how it will have looked if you’d bought it ‘new’ in the early 1960’s.

If you’ve seen my recent reel, you’ll appreciate the condition it was in, and the transformation it’s undergone. These pieces are available pretty widely - some painted, others ‘restored’ - but my idea of restoration is to not simply sand it back a little and apply a new layer of varnish in the hope it looks a bit better. No, no, no. Mine has been completely dismantled, stripped, repaired, and refinished to an extraordinary standard. It’s hard to get this across in photos, but I take close-ups for a reason, and I implore you to zoom in and have a good nosey around the finish. It’s beautiful! The legs have been re-sprayed in gloss black, whilst the handles and adjustable feet have been stripped, polished, and re-lacquered for ongoing protection. Oh, and then there’s the inside….

Level of finish aside, what else separates an Ep piece from others? Well, it’s the little, unexpected surprises that greet your eyes of course! Inside, the underwhelming mahogany-lined cabinets have been adorned with a classy, Christian Lacroix-designed ‘Picassiette’ paper in gold and black, sealed for prosperity, and coupled with mirrored bases with walnut trim, thick glass shelves hung on discreet brass supports, all lit with multifunctional, motion-sending LED lights. But it doesn’t end there; each drawer - one with cutlery dividers - is finished with soft black velvet, just because.

‘‘𝓦𝓲𝓵𝓼𝓸𝓷’ is the first Ep offering to have been created ‘for sale’ in nearly two years, such is the number of commissioned projects I’ve been busy with over that time, and it’s a little cracker. If you’ve been deliberating on elevating your home decor, but just haven’t found a piece of furniture that really sings to you, then ‘God Only Knows’ your hunt may just end here…

⏳ ‘𝑻𝒆𝒎𝒑𝒖𝒔’ ⌛️

Cast your minds back to 𝓔ₚ creation #113; ‘Empress’ - another of my Art Deco ‘Beautility’ cocktail cabinets, lovingly redesigned for my client with a sunburst motif, and striking geometric linework… Well, this, my latest piece, will join ‘Empress’ in my client’s home, indeed the same ROOM in the same home! So the brief was straightforward enough; to redesign this Wrighton’s sideboard to complement the Beautility cabinet, allowing the Beautility to shine as the star of the show by providing a more-than-ample ‘supporting role’, shall we say.

Simple, right? Yet there were challenges aplenty…!

Some years ago, my client had decided they wanted a darker finish to the piece, so had it French polished. Now, I’m no French polisher, and certainly no expert in the process, but I’d assumed a French polisher would remove all scratches and imperfections before applying their polish, in the same way I do. Oh no, no, no, no, no. No. Turns out that the dark polish merely ‘hides’ these imperfections. So, once I removed it, there they all were. And how many there were!! The veneer was COVERED in scratches. This, on top of the fact that many sections of veneer had become brittle and lifted. This needed sticking back down or, in many cases, completely removing. In its place, I applied filler then painted on the veneer using acrylic paints, mimicking the surrounding woodgrain. Indeed much of the ‘stripey’ grain to the bottom of the front is actually painted on!

Now, onto the design itself. This was very much a case of the design being dictated by the piece’s condition. Take a look at the ‘before’ shot; you’ll observe the staggeringly awkward ‘lighting bolt’ handles that my client had put on (it’s ok, they accept they made a mistake with them!). Once removed, these left fixing holes that needed to be hidden within the design, and the ‘hourglass’ design you see is heavily influenced by the need to disguise these holes - each gold line carefully positioned such that the gold is painted over each filled hole. It was important too to find a design that works with the Art Deco/geometric nature of the Beautility cabinet too, but ‘simplified’ such that it plays that all important supporting role. Internally, the cocktail carousel had dropped so that it scraped against the inside of the cabinet when operating. Some modifications mean this now works like a dream again, and the black adds a touch of class, with the oxblood leatherette-lined drawers too.

𝘖𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘪𝘯: 𝘖𝘭𝘥 𝘕𝘰𝘳𝘴𝘦/𝘚𝘸𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘩 - '𝘱𝘶𝘳𝘦', '𝘤𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘯'

And now for something completely different...

This ancient, little sewing box had a sole purpose in life; to store all manner of haberdashery supplies, with its silk lining and inset pin cushion. For more than a generation it was used for such means, handed down through the family - grandmother, mother, daughter - thimbles, cotton spools, pins & needles... it served everyone well.

Yet once its current owner reached a stage in life when it was time to slow down, take it easy, so too did this little sewing box. Time for a change. Its ragged old silk lining has been replaced with a pure white leatherette, its lid stripped and glowing golden oak again, and its legs and casing enveloped in a calming white mineral paint. Its simplicity is its charm. It's fit to go again, for this generation, and the next, and the next....

🚨RATHER EXCITING NEWS! 🚨
Remember ‘𝓓𝓾𝓴𝓮’, one of my Beautility cocktail cabinets that I restored yonks ago? Well, several months ago, I received a call from a TV production company who had spotted it online, and enquired about using it in an upcoming series dramatising the true story of Ruth Ellis - the last woman to be hanged in the UK. I explained that the cabinet had sold, but passed on the details of my client to discuss a loan….

Turns out my customer was only too happy let them use it, and the first episode airs this evening at 9pm on ITV! So, if you’re tuned in, keep your eyes pealed for my furniture offspring won’t you…! 🍿🎬

𝓔𝓬𝓵𝓮𝓬𝓽𝓲𝓬𝓪 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗝𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗦. proudly presents Project No. EP114:

👑‘𝔼𝕞𝕡𝕣𝕖𝕤𝕤’👑

It was only a matter of time before another one of these graced my page, right?

Ian commissioned yours truly to create an Art Deco-inspired ‘Beautility’ cocktail cabinet to complete his soon-to-be-refurbished home in Stratford-upon-Avon. This, the 4th incarnation/variation on a classic 𝓔ₚ design, underwent a similar treatment to those that have gone before; a complete strip-down, (p)reparations, and refinish incorporating a multi-tonal geo-deco motif to the central doors and drawers, gold metallic painted finish to the interior, and newly-cut mirrors and fixings with gold accents. Oxblood leatherette lines one drawer providing cushioned protection for wine bottles, and a multifunction LED light illuminates the interior cocktail compartment. New handles - back-plated pulls to the drawers below, and a pair of glorious maxi sunburst semicircle handles to the drop-down door above - were carefully selected to compliment the motif.

Some people tell me it’s brave to take super close-up photos of my finished pieces like I do, since there’s a risk of highlighting each and every imperfection. But there is good reason why an 𝓔ₚ project tales so long; its those imperfections that I toil over; re-profiling and disguising every hole, d**k, scratch and crevice takes time and sleight of hand, so I’m proud to get up close and personal for its photoshoot. I hope you enjoy the pics. 📸

Ian has asked that I now tackle another piece for him. What will it be? Well you’ll just have to wait and see…😜
