🐞 The Aphid Avengers Are Arriving! Following our previous post about Aphids and our Fairy Liquid trick to knock those June aphids off your roses, you might want to pause before your next spray!

Keep a sharp eye out on your rose buds for these funky-looking, tiny black and orange critters. They look a bit like miniature, spiky alligators, but don’t be fooled—these are ladybird larvae, and they are the absolute best friends your garden could ask for right now.

🍽️ Nature's Ultimate Pest Control
Before they turn into the familiar red-and-black spotted beetles we all love, ladybird larvae are voracious eaters. Just one of these little guys can scoff up to 50 aphids a day!

Our Maintenance Team's Top Tip:

🔍 Check before you spray: If you spot these larvae crawling around your rose bushes, put the spray bottle down and let nature do the hard work for you. Spraying—even with a mild soap mixture—can disturb them or wash away their dinner!

At Country Gardens, we love working with nature to keep Yorkshire gardens thriving. Our regular garden maintenance packages ensure your plants get expert care, from pest management to professional pruning, so you can just sit back and enjoy the blooms.

🌹 Is it just us, or did the aphids get the memo that it’s officially June?

We’ve spotted these little green sap-suckers starting to set up camp. Before you run to the shed for the heavy-duty chemicals, our maintenance team has a brilliant, eco-friendly top tip that we use out in the field.

🧼 The Fairy Liquid Trick. You don't need harsh sprays to keep them at bay. Try this instead:

✅Mix a few drops of Fairy Liquid into a spray bottle filled with water.

✅ Give your rose buds and stems a gentle spritz.

How it works: It doesn't actually kill the aphids—instead, it acts as an irritant, so they drop off!

⚠️ Just a heads-up: Because this is a natural deterrent rather than a chemical nuclear option like RoseClear, you will need to repeat it every few days or after a heavy North Yorkshire downpour. But your garden wildlife (and your soil) will thank you for it!

Need a hand keeping your outdoor space looking pristine this summer? Let our expert maintenance team take care of the hard work for you.

🌸 The Enchanting 'Nora Barlow' 🌸 Meet Aquilegia (commonly known as Granny’s Bonnet or Columbine)—specifically the striking 'Nora Barlow' variety.

Unlike traditional Aquilegias with their classic winged spurs, 'Nora Barlow' steps it up with these unique, pom-pom-like double flowers. With its distinct layers of soft pink, ruby red, and pale green tips, it’s an absolute showstopper for late spring to early summer.

💡 Top Planting & Care Tips:

⛅️The Perfect Spot: They love dappled shade or a spot that gets morning sun and afternoon relief. They look fantastic tucked into borders or brightening up a woodland garden.

🌱 Soil Preferences: They aren't overly fussy but will thrive best in moist, well-drained soil.

✅ Top Tip: Aquilegia are famous self-seeders and cross-pollinate incredibly easily. If you have a few different varieties in your garden, the bees will mix things up for you! When they drop their seeds, the next generation will often surprise you with completely new, unique flower variations and colours.

✅Control vs. Chaos: If you want those fun, volunteer variations, let the seed heads dry on the plant. If you want to keep them contained, just cut the stems right back to the ground after flowering.

Perfect oasis vibes ☀️🏖️ We created this stunning space to bring all the warmth, textures, and sensory delights of the Mediterranean to a beautifully sheltered corner of the family garden. 🧱🌿

Think natural stone paving, contrasting terracotta brick accents, fragrant lavender and salvias, an elegant olive tree, architectural ferns, a water feature, and a dining area. It’s all about creating layers of interest and a space where time just... stops. 🍹😎

The secret to a low-maintenance summer border? Choosing plants that naturally love the heat. 🌿☀️

By combining silver-foliaged heroes like Lamb's Ear and Santolina with robust purple Salvias and Alliums, you get an effortlessly classy palette—while keeping the bees incredibly happy! 🐝✨

The Core Mediterranean Palette:

✅ Lavender Cotton (Santolina chamaecyparissus): The prominent silvery-green mound right in the foreground with those distinctive, bright yellow button flowers just starting to pop. Extremely drought-tolerant.

✅ Lamb's Ear (Stachys byzantina): Directly next to the Santolina, providing that fantastic, soft, fuzzy silver foliage that reflects intense sunlight and handles dry spells beautifully.

✅ Salvia / Wood Sage (Salvia nemorosa): The striking, upright spikes of deep violet-purple in the background, drawing the eye down the border.

✅ Allium: The iconic, structural purple pom-poms fading gracefully, adding height and architectural interest.

🏡 Create your perfect retreat with a confidence that lasts. We bring deep horticultural knowledge and a reassuring 5-year warranty to our unique garden transformations.

💜 PLANT FOCUS: Iris sibirica (Siberian Iris) 💜

With their elegant, deep violet-purple petals and intricate, veined markings, Iris sibirica is just beginning its peak display. These graceful plants feature delicate, grass-like foliage that stays looking sharp and architectural long after the flowers have finished.

📅 Getting the Most Out of Your Irises This Summer.

To keep your display looking immaculate through their main blooming window, here is our team's essential horticultural advice from now and into June:

💦 Moisture is Key: Unlike bearded irises that like to bake in dry soil, Iris sibirica thrives in moist, rich conditions. They are completely at home in a damp border or planted near the edge of a garden pond.

✅ Your Routine (Deadheading): These stunning blooms will carry on gracing our gardens right through to the end of June. As individual flowers fade, snap off the spent blooms at the base of the stem. This stops the plant from wasting energy on seed production and keeps the display looking tidy.

✅ Leave the Foliage: Once the flowering season ends at the turn of July, resist the urge to cut back that lovely green, reed-like foliage. Leave it alone until late autumn when it turns golden-brown; that's the time to cut it down to the ground.

🍂 Easy to Propagate: They form dense, robust clumps over time. If they outgrow their space, our team recommends lifting and dividing them in early autumn or right after they finish blooming to create entirely new plants for free!

🌞 The Right Spot: If dividing don't forget Siberian Irises absolutely love a position in full sun to partial shade. The more sun they get, the better the flower display will be!

Matching the perfect plant to your garden's soil and sunlight is what stands our horticultural experts above the rest.

💛🌸 Country Gardens Top Tips: Growing Erythronium 'Pagoda'🌸💛

As we enjoy the last of the stunning Erythronium 'Pagoda' displays as their spring show begin to wind down; here are a few essential horticultural know-hows to get the best out of them if you want to introduce them to your own garden:

🌳 Positioning is Everything: Think of a natural woodland floor. Erythronium thrives in dappled or partial shade, making them the ultimate choice for planting beneath the canopy of deciduous trees or large shrubs. Avoid hot, south-facing borders where the afternoon sun will scorch the foliage.

🍂 The Forest Floor Soil Mix: They prefer a fertile, humus-rich soil that stays reliably moist during the spring but drains well. When planting, dig in plenty of leaf mould or well-rotted compost to give them that rich, organic structure they crave.

🌱 Handle with Care (Autumn Planting): Unlike tulips or daffodils, Erythronium bulbs don’t have a protective, papery outer skin. Because they are fleshy, they dry out quickly. If you buy them bare, get them into the ground immediately in autumn.

📏 Planting Depth & Angle: Plant the bulbs relatively deep—around 10–15cm (4–6 inches). A great professional trick is to plant them slightly on their sides rather than pointing straight up; this prevents water from pooling in the crown of the bulb and causing it to rot over winter.

🌼Let Them Fade Naturally: Once those gorgeous yellow flowers finish, leave the mottled leaves completely alone. Let the foliage die back naturally so the bulb can pull all that vital energy back underground for an even better display next spring.

From perfect plant placement to expert seasonal care, our maintenance team looks after every detail.

🔴 PEST WATCH: Keep an eye out for Lily Beetles! 🔴 As the weather warms up over the next couple of months, you might start noticing the Scarlet Lily Beetle making an appearance on your lilies and fritillaries.

These bright red pests actually began emerging on sunny days back in late March and April to seek out host plants. Right now, from April through to mid-summer, they are busy laying small batches of eggs on the undersides of leaves.

The good news? There shouldn't be too many of them around just yet, so you can easily manage them without reaching for any nasty chemicals.

💬 Our top horticultural tip for dealing with them? The trusty thumb-and-forefinger method! Simply sneak up, pick them off manually, and dispose of them.

🐞 Just a quick warning from the team: because they are bright red, they often get mistaken for ladybirds. But look closely—unlike our helpful, dome-shaped ladybird friends, lily beetles are completely solid red with no black spots, and have narrower, black bodies.

Keeping your garden thriving and pest-free takes an expert eye, which is exactly what our maintenance team brings to every garden we look after. Whether it’s expert plant care or complete garden design, we’ve got you covered.

💙 The "Holy Grail" of the Garden: Meconopsis

There is nothing quite like the piercing blue of a Himalayan Blue Poppy (Meconopsis) to stop you in your tracks. They are famously "diva-ish" plants, but once you understand their specific needs, they are a breathtaking addition to the garden during May and June.

While a single bloom is fleeting, lasting only a few days, a healthy, established plant will produce a succession of flowers that can last for 3 to 5 weeks.

How to help them thrive:

✅ The Foundation: More important than pH levels is the structure of your soil. They require a humus-rich environment. Loading your beds with plenty of organic matter is the secret to success.

✅ The Moisture Balance: They need a "moist but well-drained" soil. They won't tolerate drying out, but they also won't settle for "wet feet" or standing water.

✅ The Perfect Spot: These are woodland specialists. Site them in partial shade where they are sheltered from cold, drying winds, which can easily scorch their delicate foliage.

✅ Soil Type: They are happiest in a slightly alkaline to slightly acidic soil, provided that organic matter is present to maintain consistent moisture.

If you have a damp, shaded border or a woodland-style corner, these blue beauties are well worth the extra effort.

📍 Top Tip: If you're planting these this month, keep a close eye on the watering during any dry spells in May to ensure the roots stay cool and damp while they establish!
