Sebastian Cox Ltd

Sebastian Cox Ltd Designers, makers and environmentalists. Fine furniture with a nature-first perspective. Proving that a traditional approach can be radical.

The Sebastian Cox workshop and studio were founded in 2010 on the principle that a traditional approach could be radical and that the past can be used to design and make the future. Without nostalgia or sentimentality but with respectful inventiveness and new technology. We mill trees, design and make furniture.

Quietly, carefully, alongside our dining tables, four-poster beds and sideboards, we have been designing and making fitted joinery for beautiful homes across the UK.

In collaboration with renowned architects Goldstein Heather, we recently created this beautiful kitchen in Stamford Brook using English-grown ash — the perfect material to complement the refined simplicity and airiness of its architectural surroundings.

Rooted in natural materials and tactile finishes, our bespoke kitchen joinery brings warmth, softness and a sense of ease to everyday living. Designed with functionality at its core, each space is made not only for cooking, but for gathering, connecting and following the simple rhythms of daily life.

Gaderen is the old English word for garden. The perfect name, then, for our outdoor dining table.

Not overly complicated or oversized to account for being outdoors but carefully designed to withstand the elements while retaining the elegance and refinement of our interior furniture.

This dining set and our other outdoor furniture is available to view on our website, there’s a link in our bio to take you there with ease.

We’ve been working with for over a year now, originally making batches and batches of furniture for the 55 bedrooms, now working to bring the landscape to life for nature and for guests.

This video is a typical day for me at Powdermills now - including a quick exercise (in between meetings to plan a beaver damming day and other rewilding plans) to make some beautiful low seating for half term picnics with one of my apprentices .morgan.woodworking.

I’ve always loved long-term collaborations with clients and this place is becoming special to me as we help shape and form the hotel over the months and years after opening.

Oh and watch to the end for the most magical encounter with nature - only possible if you open your eyes wide and tune in as we are doing at

Woodwose is an old English word meaning, ‘wild person of the woods’. Isn’t that wonderful? As an ode to people of the wild, we present our Woodwose outdoor dining and armchairs for gardens, terraces, shady and sun-drenched outdoor spaces.

Willowcam! During the day much of my job is checking in with the makers on their various projects. Willow always comes with me like my little shadow. We thought it would be fun to see the workshop from her perspective.

This is the Hedge bench, shown here on the sprawling edge of a particularly rambunctious hedge.

It offers a comfortable, relatively upright sit with the potential to recede into whatever planting scheme surrounds it. Be it something carefully considered and curated or otherwise.

The Meadow daybed, sitting low to the ground, is designed to bring you closer to nature. In the height of summer be enveloped by the rising cow parsley.

The daybed offers a generous lounge seat and essentially a deck for relaxing, sharing food, hopefully a nice view and good conversation.

Our Kerf armchair, reimagined and evolved into a beautiful and generous sofa. The broad arms and back make for a well supported sit, with coffee cup and paperback very comfortably close at hand.

This handsome piece, captured here in the new RM Williams Jermyn Street store, is equally well suited to reading nooks, lounges or the most welcoming of hallways.

A custom version is being carefully developed in our studio, designed to be made entirely in solid English grown ash and upholstered in a relaxed, neutral linen. We’ll share the finished piece.

The kerf armchair from our current collection is upholstered with beautiful a ruskin linen from Morris & Co.

Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you might like your own.

The doors to the new RM Williams store on Jermyn Street are now open. We have spent the last five months designing and making the store interior using solid English-grown oak and RM Williams’ own design principles of designing with intent, bespoke durable craftsmanship, and connecting to the land and community.

Boots designed by RM Williams are constructed from a single piece of leather, folded around the foot and stitched at the heel. This pioneering design was conceived in 1932 by Reginald Murray ‘RM’ Williams, tired of the seams of his boots rubbing in the stirrups while riding. Using his material in a bold new way he created a supremely comfortable boot with a clean aesthetic.

We’ve constructed the curves of our cabinetry and furniture in a way that mirrors Reginald Murray’s material innovation, making careful incisions in solid wood so it can be curved. Where pieces of wood come together, we’ve fixed it in place with our own ‘stitch’.

As a furniture maker, I’m really interested in pushing the boundaries of what we can do with wood, one of our oldest materials, next to leather. Seeing everything come together over the past few weeks, and the store now filled with visitors, has been incredibly rewarding.

Huge congratulations to the team on the opening of their beautiful new store.

We have just delivered the final pieces of furniture for the guest suites at the newly opened retreat Crafted at Powdermills, whose nature-inspired design has just earned it The Sunday Times’ South East England Hotel of the Year.

Tucked away in meandering hills and ancient woodland in East Sussex, the flagship hotel of ‌is a place comprehensively designed inside and out for complete reset; shaped not just by function but by the surrounding landscape too.

What I’ve loved most about this project is its long term view peppered with fast-paced deadlines. We milled, dried and made furniture with trees from the landscape within a matter of months, designing and refining the pieces with architects House of Dre and founder Chris King at breakneck speed.

We then crafted 55 bedrooms worth of furniture in efficient batches as the wood came out of our kiln. It was really special to be working in this direct, efficient and rational way with material that has such a connection to the landscape surrounding the hotel. Guests will wake up in a bed made of the woodlands of the landscape around.

At the same time we built an ethos and plan for the return of nature to the 75 acre estate which includes introducing a beaver mimicry, planned woodland and meadow management, tree veteranisation and conservation grazing. We want to see red-listed species like nightingales and dormice back in the land over the coming years.

You might have seen on my stories too that I’m now leading monthly walking tours and trail runs to share the experience of this regenerative work with guests and members.

There is something especially meaningful about creating pieces of design that belong to a place. We’re so pleased to share these pieces and the place with you.
