These hand crafted 'working' sticks are ideal for Fathers day gift idea, they are practical and most importantly they look fantastic!

Working Sticks

Stick & Sutterby sticks are ‘working’ sticks which are handcrafted in Suffolk using traditional woodworking techniques. Each stick is individual as are the hazel shafts, lime, ash or antler thumb heads. The shafts are handpicked, seasoned for twelve months and steam straightened. The hazel shafts are chosen for their size and mottled silver brown or silver snakeskin appearance. Each stick is rubbed down with wire wool, had the knots rounded over and have three coats of sanding sealer. The traditional wooden thumb heads are hand carved and finished from a solid lump of seasoned ash, lime or Red, Roe antler. The collars and tips are made from cow, buffalo horn or bone. The finish is three coats of finishing oil to the shaft and three coats of yacht varnish for wooden thumb heads before being polished. Stick and Sutterby deliberately leave the brass screw heads showing to add a distinctive design giving a unique, slightly industrial steam punk finish. Bespoke finishing touches can include leather wrist straps, initialled Sterling silver name plate, solid brass or rubber wading ferrules.

Mottled hazel shaft with carved ash thumb head, white bone collar and tips and exposed brass screws. Length, 1335mm to bottom of thumb. Diameter, 23mm at collar, 19mm at tip.

Mottled snakeskin hazel shaft with Red deer thumb head, white bone collar and tips, exposed brass screws, brown leather wrist strap and white rubber ferrule. Length, 1410mm to bottom of thumb. Diameter, 21mm at collar, 17mm at tip.

Stick 3
A heavier working mottled snakeskin hazel shaft with traditional carved small wooden lime shepherds crook head with black buffalo horn collar. Length, 1520mm to top of crook. Diameter 26mm at collar, 22mm at tip.

Stick 4
Bark removed hazel shaft, five coats of finishing oil with Roe deer antler head, black tips with exposed brass screw heads with black leather wrist strap. Length 1227mm. Diameter 25mm at collar, 20mm at tip. A lovely, lighter, well balanced, unique stick for a lady.

Restored period large pine blanket box
This is an original large pine blanket box. The pine box has dovetail, and an old lock which probably dates it to the early 20th century. As was the fashion, it was painted red and we have spent hours removing the paint bringing it back to its natural beautiful pine. Inside it has been wall papered which we have left, as this adds to it patina. Unusually, it has a small storage box within. It is finished in a honey wax to bring out its colour and grain. This is a large, elegant box would grace any room in any home. Please see and check the dimensions as this is a big blanket box.

Dresser
Many hours of work and tlc has gone into this lovely old dresser bringing it back to life. It is original and with the beauty of the wood grain and colour, it would have been a great shame to paint and hide, therefore the finish is simple with clear wax and polish. In being a period piece, it does have a few scars and repairs which all add to its history and patina. This dresser would grace any home and could be split into a cupboard unit and shelves, or as one. Please note the crockery is not included in the sale.

Restored wooden rocking/nursing chair.
Made in Belgium in the early 70’s of traditional design, this is now a lovely example of a typical large, heavy, solid, wooden rocking chair of that era. It has been stripped and sanded, the addition of a fixed seat pad removed prior to painting with three coats of matt Egyptian cotton and then lacquered. This is a very comfortable rocking chair which would be ideal in a nursery or on a patio for summer.

This was ordinally made in dark mahogany veneered wood. It is a well-built piece with dovetail joints to the drawers and sold wood shelves on brass fixings. We decided to brighten it up, so it was sanded down and primed before three coats of Egyptian cotton matt paint were applied. It is quite heavy, and the shelves are all adjustable. It would make a nice piece in any room as the contrast between the Egyptian cotton paintwork and mahogany is quite striking.

Restored handmade 2-shelf large bookcase.
This is an unusual, large, solid, wooden, handmade bookcase. We particularly like its simple elegant design, with moveable shelves and the fact that its 6 foot long. It has been sanded, primed and painted in clotted cream chalky paint together with two coats of clear lacquer to the top. The back and shelves have been restored, before being waxed and polished.

This is a heavy, solid wooden kitchen/dining table which comfortably seats four people. It is an attractive table with nice detailing to the legs and an end cutlery drawer. The legs and frame have been scrubbed with sugar soap before sanding, then primed before two coats of clotted cream chalky paint were applied. The top has been scraped and sanded then waxed and polished. This is a lovely piece of solid furniture that will look superb in any kitchen, dining room or conservatory. A new table with the same dimensions and design is over £350.

This is a heavy, solid wooden kitchen/dining table which comfortably seats six people. It is an attractive table with nice detailing to the legs and a centre cutlery drawer. After much thought, we decided not to paint the frame as covering up the grain and patina which would have ruined the cottage/farmhouse look. Therefore, it has been restored, with the legs and frame scrubbed with sugar soap before being waxed and polished. The scrub wax top is a better finish than varnish, so it has been stripped, scraped and sanded before waxing and polishing. This is a lovely piece of solid furniture that will look superb in any kitchen, dining room or conservatory.
