I'm privileged to have spent today enjoying the company of (and being mildly annoyed by) my two adorably unusual children. I appreciate setting aside a day to toast the myriad joys and struggles of motherhood. Yet society and culture could do more every day to represent mothers and help us thrive. And it could do way more to represent those who are not mothers for whatever reason. I spend a lot of time these days thinking about the (really rather common) identities that have been practically rendered invisible by the heteronormative structures of the patriarchy. The notion that a woman's life has to follow a specific narrative is a harmful, limiting thing to inherit. So here's to those whose realities of family, love and caring don't match such narrow definitions, and to taking a sledgehammer to the structures that no longer suit us.,πͺπ»
