Knife Care
1. Don't push your knife in to the soil, if you are not using it then store it back in the sheath rather in the ground, both for safety as well as caring for your knife.
2. Don't dig with your knife, this may sound obvious, but this will definitely damage your blade. Just don't do it....
3. Make sure the blade is stored away clean and dry, not wet and covered in muck.
4. Lightly oil the knife with food grade oil to add a layer of protection and stave off any rust issues. Do this just before storing the knife away rather than just before use as you don't want to be handling a slippery tool.
5. Keep the sheath well maintained too. Make sure it is clean and dry. If made of leather then oil regularly too to help longevity.
6. Knife quality varies greatly so be sure to only use the knife for what it is intended for.
7. A carbon steel knife with a 90 degree spine on the back of the blade is an effective striker with a ferro rod, but NEVER use the blade. This will trash the cutting edge and cause unnecessary damage to your knife.
8. Some battening with a high quality knife is ok, but if you have a high volume of battening to do then maybe consider using an axe as a more appropriate tool for splitting to reduce wear and tear on your knife.
