‘Foam Free in Five’. Part of our sustainability strategy is to eliminate polyurethane foam from our furniture over five years. It’s a key target of our Do Net Good plan aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals: No 3 Good Health and No 13 Climate Action. Inspired by the climate strikes of 2019 and recognising the urgency of action on global heating, we renewed our mission to do better for the environment and our Do Net Good strategy was born. We aim to be completely transparent in our journey as we forge ahead on the road to true sustainability by putting people and the planet first.
The plastic polymer Polyurethane has been a wonder-product. So-much-so you’ll find it in everyday items like furniture, automotive interiors, packaging and bedding. But along with it being derived from fossil fuels, it’s non recyclable and can only be disposed of by high temperature incineration which inevitably results in pollution. Additionally, most UK waste plants are not equipped for this, thus contributing to the ongoing pernicious problem of landfill. If this wasn’t alarming enough, when used in furniture, highly toxic flame retardants are added and as products age, so do the retardants and polymers, breaking down into dust sized particles and the air we breathe. There is a lot of talk of eco-foams made with plant based content but the fine print suggests this is minimal and most are still polyurethane based.
So, 2 years into our foam free in 5 years journey, how are we doing? We use wool, a natural fire retardant as a barrier between layers of naturally derived fillings such as feathers, coir (coconut fibre), and latex. 5 MARK product ranges are now truly foam free as standard with no extra cost or lead time - Arris, Mylo, Mylar, Mycroft and Mybooth.
