SOCIAL MEDIA CHANGED MY LIFE.

When I first started out 22 odd years ago, before Social media, I would put all my trust in the guys in the local merchants telling me what paint is good for a particular job. This was usually the likes of Dulux, Crown and Johnstones. Or even B&Q and Homebase retail paints. And it was usually vinyl matt and oil based undercoat and high gloss.

Then came all the VOC changes. White oils based products became terrible and custard yellow before you could even shut the door at the end of the job.

This forced me to want better. To build my product knowledge more. To offer customers alternatives to the ever changing market.
Luckily for me at a similar time, social media became a thing, and facebook groups with likeminded Decorators, made it a place where knowledge could be shared, tips and tricks learnt, and problems resolved.

Social media was probably one of the best things to happen to my business.
Not for the following, not for the likes. But to build relationships with brands aswell as other tradespeople. Expanding my product knowledge also helps at quote stage. Showing your customer you know what you are talking about could be the difference between you winning a job or losing out to the next person who does.

In this photo alone, is just a snippet of products that I am using for a dining room.
From adhesion primer to wall emulsion and high-hide primer, to the eggshell topcoat and ceiling paint. It’s not just basic stuff anymore. But feeding my brain with thinking ‘this will be a good product for that, this will save me a coat there’ means I get to use the best, and the customer gets the best possible results.
This isn’t the kind of stuff you can just pick up from B&Q, nor is it the cheapest. But look at it from the POV of how much you save in labour costs for using good materials.

So I guess what i’m trying to say is if you are passionate about something you do, try and absorb as much information you can, because though all the negatives of social media (and boy there are a lot of those), comes some real positives. Use it to your advantage!

Have you used the products in this photo, or is it all a bit alien to you?
I would love to know your thoughts on this 💭

THIS ALWAYS CAUSES A DEBATE! 👀

“If you’ve gone to all the effort of stripping it back to bare wood, why paint it afterwards?”

A lot of people felt this window and shutters should have been left bare after stripping, and I completely understand why. But every restoration project is different.

This isn’t oak or mahogany, it’s pine. Historically, pine joinery in Georgian properties was usually painted, so the off-white finish is actually more in keeping with the building’s character.

More importantly, restoration isn’t just about appearance. This window had decades of failing paint, blistering, peeling and flaking. Stripping back creates a sound foundation for future coatings and helps protect the joinery for years to come.

To leave it fully bare, every inch would have needed stripping, adding significant time and cost. Years of repairs and filler would also have been highly visible, drawing attention away from the craftsmanship of the window itself.

The goal was never simply to expose timber. It was to restore the joinery properly, preserve it for the future and deliver a finish that suited both the property and the client.

Interestingly, the larger shutters in the same home were stripped and finished with clear wax because they were in much better condition. Different timber, different condition, different approach.

That’s the thing with restoration: there’s rarely one right answer.

So what would you have done?

🎨 Paint them
🪵 Leave them bare

Let me know in the comments.

IT ENDED UP OK GUYS!!!

It wasn’t the ideal start when I got the first primer on, but a quick switch up meant that all was fine!

Watch the process from start to finish on how I restored this door and frame and made it look brand new again.
You may have already seen the reel of how I undertook the surround restoration, but I don’t think I have shown much of how I did the door and frame alone. And if I did, I have gained a fair few followers since, so you may have just missed it!

What do you think of Mr David then? I personally love it when the customer goes bold!! 💛

TELL ME WHAT YOUR NUMBER ONE IS

Not one brush fits all. Or else only one would exist. That’s why opinions aren’t fact.
What I think makes a great cutting in brush, might be the opposite of what others go for. And visa-versa.
But having used this for the past year or so, currently it’s probably my number one for emulsion. You all know I love a home bargains just as much, but they all have their strong and weak points. This Badger brush doesn’t necessarily hold a gobload of paint, but the line it cuts is insane.
My top 5 always evolves, the more I try, or if a company changes them to be inferior and I then switch it up.
I will have to do my top 5 brush selection soon and describe what I use each one for, so keep an eye out 👀

So, what are your thoughts on this Paint Warrior badger ? do you rate it, does it make your top 3? Let me know what your absolute top dog is!

HIDDEN SHUTTERS FULLY RESTORED!

It’s just a snippet of the hours spent, but hopefully you get the jist of the process.

Fire any questions my way, and I would love to know what you thought of it all, and if you would have done anything differently. I hope you enjoyed seeing the full process, albeit a shortened version!

PERFECTION AND BEING A PERFECTIONIST…
There is a BIG difference.

Nobody is perfect, what’s the point in that, when you can’t strive to do better next time.

But being a perfectionist is what separates you from the next person.

So aim for perfection,
but don’t ever think you have reached it. Because you haven’t. And that’s ok 🫡

What a feeling. Knowing it’s wall to wall sunshine for a decent period of time 😎

Hope you all get to enjoy the 45th bank holiday this year, and make the most of the sunshine ☀️

What are you all up to?

Whatever it is, do it well 🫡

Big love,
Wes 🫶🏻

Time will tell.

Pen from poundland.
79p brush from home bargains. Soup pot from Sainsbury’s, and a woodstain from Sadolin. That’s all you need to know, really 💁🏼
