Robin Downe became a member of the Sheffield musical community when he graduated in 1992. After completing a sound engineering course at Sheffield's Red Tape he became an in-house engineer at the legendary Hallamshire venue in Sheffield, learning the trade by baptism of fire. Through this job he met and joined Sheffield ska-punk band Blind Mole Rat, initially as their sound-man but eventually as their bassist. He extensively toured Britain and Europe with them for two years. In 1993 he met James Bacon and ex Mission guitarist Simon Hinkler and they formed the electronic trio Mindfeel. Producing and composing their own version of dance music, they released two singles 'Cranium' in 1997 and 'Hesitate' in 1998 (the latter featuring future solo- artist Jane Weaver), also signing for publishing with V2. After Mindfeel folded in 1999 Downe became a full-time recording engineer and from 2003 to 2015 worked out of Yellow Arch Studios in Sheffield, becoming completely freelance from 2016 onwards. He has since worked on a large number and range of recording projects in a variety of studios both in the UK and Europe. Past clients have included The Macabees, Jarvis Cocker, French lounge duo The Lovers , Richard Hawley, and highly-rated world-beat act Rafiki Jazz. In 2013 and 2015 he engineered albums for French songwriter Bertrand Belin, and the debut album by John Lennon McCullagh, the first signing and release by Alan McGee's 359 Records. He now works on recording projects and mixing from his home studio and other facilities. He plays guitar and bass with many other projects and bands.
