There’s something incredibly satisfying about breathing new life into a tired piece of furniture, especially when the results are this dramatic. In this project, our customer restored a worn tan leather sofa and transformed it into a deep, luxurious dark brown using our superior extra strong penetrating leather dye.
This wasn’t just a colour change—it was a full restoration that brought back depth, character, and durability.

Before: The Starting Point
The original sofa had seen better days. The tan finish was faded and uneven with years of wear. While structurally sound, its appearance no longer suited their interior.
Rather than replacing it, they chose to restore and recolour, saving both money, the environment whilst achieving a completely refreshed look.

Step 1: Deep Cleaning & Surface Preparation
Before applying any dye, proper preparation was essential, the leather was thoroughly cleaned to remove dirt, body oils and surface contaminants that prevent dye pe*******on.

Step 2: Applying the Dark Brown Leather Dye
Using our high-performance leather dye, our client carefully applied 1 application of our extra strong aniline dye which gives excellent coverage and colour depth with a flexible finish that moves with the leather. The transformation really begins to show at this stage, as the sofa shifts from tired tan to deep, elegant brown.

Step 3: Finishing
Once the desired colour was achieved, we sealed the surface with a protective wax coat.
This final layer:
Enhances durability
Adds a natural sheen
Protects against future fading

What was once a faded tan sofa is now a rich, dark brown centrepiece that looks and feels like new. The colour is even, the finish is smooth, and the overall aesthetic is completely elevated.

Reduce application time
Speed up drying and curing processes
Minimise prep complications

The result? You complete jobs faster without compromising quality and that’s a win for both your time and your reputation.

A Superior Finish That Clients Actually Notice

Central heating creates conditions that can damage leather, here’s why:

1. Dry air draws moisture out of the leather
Central heating lowers indoor humidity. Leather essentially needs moisture to stay supple.

Dry air pulls the natural moisture out, causing the leather to:

Dry out
Stiffen
Become brittle
2. Increased risk of cracking
Once leather dries, the surface can develop small lines and, over time these develop in to actual cracks. This is especially common on seats and armrests where there’s more friction.

3. Fading and discoloration
If the sofa sits close to a radiator, fireplace, or heating vent, the heat can fade the colour on aniline type leathers

How to protect a leather sofa from central heating
Keep it away from radiators, heaters, or vents and condition the leather at least twice a year.

Why Nano Protectors Are Unsuitable For Leather

Nano protectors contain silicon dioxide which is a film that forms a barrier on the leather, the silicon dioxide prevents any other product penetrating the leather to keep the leather soft and the surface supple, not only that, if the leather needs any colour restoration for worn areas, scratches or worn edges this silicon dioxide prevents the leather pigment adhering to the surface, the colour will literally peel off the surface. Standard or solvent cleaners can't remove the silicon dioxide either, it will cause you more problems than it will solve.

Our leather protector remains flexible and breathable yet waterproofs the leather at the same time, our leather cleaners can also remove the protector using a standard deep clean so that colour restoration and repairs can be carried out without any issues.

If you supply leather bags ort jackets we can supply our breathable leather protectors beautifully packaged and in your own brand name.

Achieving a Colour Match using Leather Paint
When it comes to restoring colour is everything. Whether you’re refreshing a faded sofa or a worn car seat, achieving the right colour match determines whether the finish looks professional, a poor colour match can look obvious, patchy and highlight damage. The good news? With the right approach, tools, and patience, you can master the art of colour matching using our leather paint.

Why Colour Matching Matters
Leather is a natural material, and even factory-finished products carry subtle variations in shade, undertones, and sheen. A mismatched repair stands out instantly, undermining the restoration. A precise match, on the other hand, blends seamlessly, making the leather look as if it has never been touched.

Step 1: Identify the Base Colour
Begin by observing the leather in good natural light. What’s the dominant colour—black, tan, burgundy, or something in-between? Avoid relying on artificial lighting, which can distort colour tones. Compare the leather against our standard colour range of leather paints and choose the nearest colour, this will give you a good colour base a starting point.

Step 2: Consider Undertones
Not all browns, blacks, or reds are the same. A brown leather chair might lean to orange undertones, while another brown could lean more towards a red undertone. Identifying these undertones helps you avoid mixing a colour that looks “close” but dries looking noticeably wrong.

Step 3: Mix Gradually
Our leather paints are highly pigmented, so small adjustments go a long way. Always mix in tiny increments, remember you can add more colour in to the mix but you can’t take it, trying to counter balance a colour once you’ve added too much can be quite tricky.

* To darken most colours, brown for a warm tone, add black for a cooler tone, drop by drop.

* To lighten, use white or a lighter version of the colour you’re working on —remember, adding too much white can dull vibrancy and create a pastel tone.

* To adjust warmth, add a touch of caramel, red, or M125 tan

* To cool down a shade, add hints of dark brown, black or grey.

Pro tip: Always test your mix on the surface and dry it immediately as the dry colour looks very different to a wet colour, remove immediately if it’s not a good match.
Leather can absorb and reflect colour differently depending on the texture and sheen of the leather. Apply a layer the same thickness of consistency you will be applying during the restoration, 2-3 layers of colour will look darker than 1 layer of colour.

Step 4: Finish with Sealant

The sheen of the sealant will make the colour appear very different, a gloss sheen will look darker than a matt sheen, sometimes all that is required to tweak a colour match is actually down to the sheen rather than the colour itself. Sealing the leather also locks in the paint for added durability against wear and tear.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Skipping prep: Always clean the leather before restoring as you don’t want to match a colour to a dirty surface.
Ignoring lighting: A colour that looks perfect indoors may look off in daylight—always check under multiple lighting conditions.

Final Thoughts
Colour matching with leather pigment is equal parts science and experience. It requires an eye for detail, a steady hand, and the patience to test and adjust. The reward? A flawless restoration or customisation that blends seamlessly, giving leather a second life while maintaining its timeless appeal.

Why is mould bad for leather?
As mould season looms its worth knowing why mould is bad for leather, how to remove it, and stop its return.
In short - mould doesn’t just look bad — it actually eats away at the leather, weakens it, and can ruin it permanently if ignored.

1. Mould Feeds on Leather
Leather is organic (made from animal hide) and contains proteins, oils, and fats.
Mould spores digest these materials, breaking down the leather fibers and weakening its structure over time.

2. Causes Stains & Discoloration
Mould leaves dark, greenish, or white hazy patches.
These stains can pe*****te the pores of the leather and sometimes become permanent if not treated quickly.

3. Leads to Cracking & Drying
Mould pulls out natural oils from leather.
This leaves the material dry, brittle, and more likely to crack.

4. Smell & Hygiene Issues
Mould creates a musty odour that’s hard to remove.
It can also trigger allergies or respiratory irritation, making items like jackets, shoes, or bags unpleasant (and unsafe) to use.

5. Spreads Quickly
If not removed, mould spores spread to other parts of the leather (and even nearby items in storage).
Once it sets deep into the material, restoration becomes much harder.

If you need advice or remove mould safely from leather AND stop it returning purchase our mould remover kit:

CAN YOU CHANGE THE COLOUR OF A LEATHER JACKET?
Re-dyeing leather a completely different colour, often leads to more problems than solutions. Leather is a porous, natural material and its original dyeing process is done during manufacturing under controlled conditions. When you try to re-dye it a different colour, the new colour may not pe*****te evenly, this is especially noticeable over larger areas compared to a small areas such as a purse or shoes. This can result in patchy spots, streaks, or an unnatural finish.
Your jacket might end up looking worse than before, with a "faded" or "blotchy" appearance that can't be easily fixed.
You are also at risk of damaging the leather's integrity by re-dyeing as it often involves several layers of colour causing it to lose its suppleness and durability. What was once a flexible, comfortable jacket could become stiff and uncomfortable, shortening its lifespan significantly.
In summary, we don’t normally offer changes of colour as it often diminishes the item's value and appeal rather than enhancing it.

We can restore the existing colour, send an image of your jacket for a quote to:
