The Modern Cat Mom Is Not What You Think Once upon a time, the phrase cat lady conjured up a very specific image: an eccentric older woman in a bathrobe, surrounded by dozens of cats, muttering to herself while opening another can of tuna. Thankfully, we’ve evolved. These days, cat moms come in every age, aesthetic, and lifestyle imaginable. Some are glamorous city girls with designer handbags and a spoiled Bengal named after a Greek god. Some are tattooed artists, cottage gardeners, busy professionals, introverts, healers, or travelers who simply prefer feline energy to chaos. And honestly? Cats themselves have changed culturally too. They’ve gone from being vaguely mysterious household pets to full-fledged internet royalty. A few fun facts for fellow cat people: – More households in the U.S. have cats than dogs. – Cats can recognize their names… they just sometimes choose to ignore you. – Purring may actually help promote healing and reduce stress. – A cat’s slow blink is considered a sign of trust and affection. (Yes, the famous “kitty kiss.”) – Orange cats have a reputation for being lovable little chaos goblins, while black cats are statistically less likely to be adopted despite being absolutely magical. The modern cat mom is also less interested in “ownership” and more interested in companionship and coexistence. Cats are not tiny employees sent here to obey us. They are tiny emotionally complicated roommates with excellent boundaries. And unlike dogs, cats tend to choose you. Their affection feels earned. When a cat curls up beside you, follows you from room to room, or sleeps near your feet, there’s a quiet sense of trust that can feel deeply grounding. Of course, not every cat mom fits the stereotype of being endlessly nurturing or obsessed with matching pajamas and birthday parties. Some of us simply appreciate the comfort of another living being sharing the space. A soft presence in the background. A creature who understands the sacred art of silence, observation, and afternoon naps. As for Lumi, she continues to settle in beautifully and has fully embraced her role as household supervisor. She and Otto are good friends now on adventures indoors and out. So this Mother’s Day, here’s to every kind of mothering energy — whether directed toward children, animals, art, gardens, community, or simply creating a softer and more loving world around us. And yes… the cats will still pretend not to care.

Black Cat Love and Luck There is something quietly subversive about the black cat’s reputation arc. Once cast as an omen, a shadow slipping across thresholds, it gradually wandered into a very different role. By the early 20th century, black cats were not merely redeemed. They were adored and considered lucky especially in the U.K. and France where these postcards are from. I’ve translated them into English. From the 1890s through the 1920s, they appeared everywhere. Postcards, advertisements, seasonal greetings, small tokens exchanged between friends and lovers. And rather than lurking in the margins, they took center stage. Dressed in hats. Carrying parasols or lucky charms. Meeting one another with a kind of playful intention. These were not symbols of fear. They were symbols of companionship, flirtation, and a softer kind of magic. And perhaps that’s the thread tying it all together. Here is another trio of luck because good luck comes in threes. And some bonus black cats!bonus black cats! from vintage postcards to present-day realities. The black cat has always lived in that in-between space: feared and adored, overlooked and mythologized, solitary and deeply relational. PUBLIC NOTICE: KITTEN SEASON IS HERE This vintage illustration from France says small cats for sale. It reminds me it wasn’t that long ago that cats were sold or given away to dubious “good homes” instead of adopted. As temperatures rise, so does the number of kittens born in shelters and on the streets. While black cats once symbolized luck in art and folklore, today they are often overlooked in adoption settings. Spaying and neutering remains one of the most powerful ways to prevent overpopulation and ensure that every cat, black, tabby, or otherwise has a chance at a safe, loving home. A little practical magic: support local rescues, consider adoption, and help rewrite the story once again in favor of these quietly enchanting creatures. Cat Love Tarot And I couldn’t resist adding some cat love tarot using a vintage illustration of two cats with intertwined tails. The two of cups is the classic card of union, attraction and harmony.

Something significant has been unfolding in animal shelters across the country over the past decade, and if you love cats, it’s worth knowing about. For the past 16 years here at Cat Wisdom 101 we have been staunch advocates of pet adoption. with a huge archive of adoption tips of all kinds. It’s anecdotal but I’d to add, I’ve noticed an uptick in adoptions from repeated visits to my local shelters over the past few months. Shelter management has improved and savvy use of social media. According to 2025 data compiled by Best Friends Animal Society from more than 10,000 shelters and rescue organizations, the number of cats killed in U.S. shelters has dropped by nearly 75% over ten years. That’s not a rounding error. That’s a real, structural shift in how communities across America are treating homeless cats. Three things appear to be driving it. 1. Community cat programs have quietly become mainstream. The practice of spaying, vaccinating, and returning healthy outdoor cats to their territories, rather than bringing them into shelters where they’re highly stressed and hard to adopt, has grown considerably. 2. Over the past decade, the number of cats returned to their outdoor homes increased by nearly 70%. For cats who simply don’t belong indoors, this is genuinely the better outcome. 3. A new generation is adopting cats. Cat adoptionsThe Quiet Revolution in Cat Shelters up 20% over ten years, with Gen Z leading all age groups. Whatever else you want to say about the younger generation, they are clearly, enthusiastically cat people. 🐾 Fun Fact: Studies show that Gen Z is more likely than any previous generation to consider their pets as family members and to make major life decisions, including where to live, based on their pets’ needs. Foster networks are saving the most vulnerable. Kittens account for nearly half of all cats entering shelters, and neonatal kittens under four weeks old can’t survive without round-the-clock feeding and care that most shelters simply can’t provide. Volunteer foster programs have stepped into that gap in a big way, dramatically improving survival rates for the youngest arrivals. Kitten Season Is Not Cute: Why Spay/Neuter Counts 🐾 Fun Fact: A neonatal kitten needs to be fed every two hours, including through the night. Foster volunteers are essentially doing newborn duty, which is no small thing. The timing of this data release is intentional. We’re entering kitten season, the spring-through-fall period when shelters see a surge of litters and tiny, fragile kittens. If you’ve ever thought about fostering, this is the moment shelters need you most. Roughly 200,000 cats are still being killed in U.S. shelters every year. That number feels both smaller than it was and larger than it should be. The trend is real and it matters. But kitten season has a way of testing whether the progress holds. We will continue to drive home the message of early spay/neuter, TNR and adopt don’t shop. Hopefully you will too!

March 17th is pulling triple duty this year, and if you’re a cat lover, this one’s especially for you. Most people know it as St. Patrick’s Day — shamrocks, green everything, and a celebration of Irish heritage going back centuries. The Irish have always had something wise to say about cats, too. As the old Irish proverb goes: “Beware of people who dislike cats.” On that, we couldn’t agree more. St. Gertrude of Nivelles Day honors the 7th-century Belgian abbess who became the patron saint of cats (and travelers, and gardeners). Cats were said to gather around her, drawn to her gentle energy — so if your cat is acting particularly regal today, now you know why. We have posted every possible exploration of cats, St. Patrick’s Day and all things Irish since 2011 from vintage cards, original art to limericks. Do a search for St.Patrick’s Day and you might find a pot of gold like this Feline LUCKY And then there’s Tea for Two Tuesday — celebrated every year on the third Tuesday of March, and this year it falls right on the 17th. The holiday is a relatively new one, created in 2016 by the tea lovers at Holiday Insights, who felt it was long past time tea had its own day. But the tradition it honors goes back much further. In the late 1840s, the Duchess of Bedford introduced afternoon tea because she grew hungry between the two daily meals of the time — and naturally, she shared it with friends. That spirit of sharing is still at the heart of it. Tea for Two Tuesday is an invitation to slow down, put the kettle on, and spend a quiet moment with someone you love. For us, that someone usually has four legs and strong opinions about where to sit. So today we’re raising a cup to St. Gertrude, wishing everyone a happy St. Patrick’s Day, and celebrating the simple pleasure of tea shared with a cat — or two, or five. How are your cats marking the occasion?

Cats, Luck, and Triple Friday the 13th of 2026 Three times the charm this year? Scroll down to the end if you are in a hurry. Friday the 13th tends to make humans nervous. Flights get rescheduled. Some buildings skip the 13th floor. And a surprising number of people still whisper about black cats crossing their path. Cats, however, remain completely unbothered. From a feline perspective, the human fear of Friday the 13th—officially called paraskevidekatriaphobia—is one of those charmingly strange human inventions. Cats have lived beside us for thousands of years and can confirm that nothing particularly terrible happens when the calendar lands on this date. In fact, if anything, the day carries a certain shimmer. Especially this year. The Rare Triple 13 of 2026 2026 is unusual because it contains three Friday the 13ths — February, March, and November. That kind of triple occurrence won’t happen again until 2037. Seen through a feline lens, this feels less like bad luck and more like a triple moon moment: three thresholds in a single year where the veil between ordinary time and mythic time thins just a little. Cats have always been creatures of thresholds. They sit in doorways, patrol window ledges, and pause exactly where one space becomes another. They understand the subtle magic liminal of in-between places. Perhaps that’s why they seem so comfortable on a day humans treat like a portal. Friday, the Goddess, and Her Cats The day Friday itself comes from F***g, a powerful Norse goddess associated with wisdom, foresight, and domestic magic. According to mythology, her chariot was pulled by two enormous cats. It’s a detail that rarely appears in modern conversations about Friday the 13th, but it reframes the entire story. The day named for a goddess who traveled with cats somehow became associated with fear of them. Cats, naturally, would find this historical mix-up amusing as it is their nature, no? Around the World, Luck Looks Different Superstitions are also wildly inconsistent depending on where you live. In Spain and Greece, the unlucky day isn’t Friday the 13th at all—it’s Tuesday the 13th, associated with Mars, the god of war. Meanwhile, black cats shift from unlucky to lucky depending on geography. • In Japan, a black cat can attract romantic good fortune and luck in love for single women. • In Scotland, a black cat arriving at your doorstep signals prosperity. • In Ireland, black cats are protective spirits. • In ancient Egypt, cats were sacred beings linked to the goddess Bastet. From a feline standpoint, the global debate over whether cats bring luck or bad luck simply proves one thing:Humans are wonderfully creative storytellers. Why Cats Don’t Believe in Luck. Cats operate according to different laws entirely. We might want to gamble or play the lottery but They don’t worry about lucky numbers. They don’t consult calendars. They don’t believe crossing a path can doom a day. Instead, they move through the world with quiet attunement to energy and place. Watch a cat closely and you’ll see: • The slow blink, a gesture of trust and energetic softening. • The half-closed eyes, a posture between waking and dreaming. • The purr, vibrating between 25–150 Hz, a range associated with healing and tissue repair. Cats live in what shamans might call the liminal state—a constant awareness of the threshold between worlds. Which is why, if any day were especially comfortable for them, it might be a day humans already sense as slightly mysterious. The Feline Invitation So if Friday the 13th arrives and the world seems a little charged with myth and rumor, consider borrowing a page from your cat. Stretch. Nap in a sunbeam. Pause at a doorway and notice the shift in light between rooms. Instead of fearing the day, treat it like a threshold. After all, if a goddess once rode through the sky in a chariot pulled by cats, perhaps Friday the 13th was never meant to be unlucky at all. It may simply be a day when the cats are a little more right than usual. Friday the 13th Cat Facts • 2026 has three Friday the 13ths — February, March, and November. The next triple occurrence won’t happen again until 2037. • The fear of Friday the 13th is called paraskevidekatriaphobia. • Friday is named after the Norse goddess F***g, whose chariot was said to be pulled by two giant cats. • In Spain and Greece, the unlucky day is Tuesday the 13th, not Friday. • In Japan and Scotland, black cats are considered lucky and symbols of prosperity. • In ancient Egypt, cats were sacred and associated with the goddess Bastet. • A cat’s purr vibrates between about 25–150 Hz, frequencies linked to healing and tissue repair. After 15 years of writing about cats, I thought I’d seen every form of enrichment. But this winter, the most fascinating object in the house isn’t a toy. It’s our Neakasa Self-Cleaning Litter Box. Who knew it would become a Winter Enrichment “Toy” for my cats. Lumi has developed a ritual. She hops in, places her front paws on the rim like she’s monitoring operations, does her business, scratches madly at the interior walls for the hell of it, and leaps out with joy. There’s a short delay before the pod’s top closes and it rotates to reset itself. The soft mechanical hum draws both cats’ attention — they sit and watch as if something important is happening. It turns out a litter box can be an adventure. Why the Self-Cleaning Litter Pod Is More Than Convenience The design is modern and open, which I prefer. I have never liked fully covered litter boxes, and most cats don’t either. Visibility and easy entry reduce stress. Just because a cat tolerates an enclosed box doesn’t mean it’s their preference. Key features: Self-cleaning rotation after each use Open-top design for comfort and visibility Step stool with charcoal odor absorber (helps with smell and catches stray litter) Mat underneath to contain scatter Less manual scooping (which, let’s be honest, is also winter enrichment for humans) This model is not excessively tall, and the step stool helps with access and litter containment. For cats with severe mobility issues, a lower-entry box might still be better — one solution never fits all. Over the years I’ve used: Low-entry boxes for arthritic seniors Extra-large pans for diabetic elders with mobility changes High-sided boxes for enthusiastic diggers Open designs for cats who dislike confinement The right litter box depends on the cat in front of you. Read one of our many articles about litter boxes like History of cat litter and boxes Remember cats like privacy for doing their business. We have several locations on two floors. This is our special litter box corner off the kitchen. Winter Enrichment and Why It Matters Winter changes the rhythm of a cat’s world. Outdoor time may be shorter, windows stay closed, and environmental novelty decreases. Even cats with GPS collars and cat doors experience a shift in stimulation. Enrichment is about providing mental and physical engagement so cats remain curious and content. It doesn’t always look like a toy or an elaborate setup. Winter Enrichment Beyond the Pod Even with the self-cleaning litter pod, Otto and Lumi thrive on variety: Outdoor adventures with GPS collars and a cat door (even in the snow) Vertical spaces and hidey holes (beds on top of a tall armoire, cozy nooks) Interactive toys for mental stimulation Bird-watching stations (Lumi is bird obsessed — Human interaction and structured play Otto and Lumi never met a box they didn’t love. Enrichment is layered. A litter pod does not replace play or emotional connection. It simply adds another stimulating element. Even a cat sleeping in the sun might be bored. That is often the perfect moment for interactive play. Winter reduces outdoor activity and environmental novelty. Indoor enrichment becomes more important, not less. A self-cleaning litter pod is not the whole solution — but it is one interesting piece. The Cat Corner Our litter pod lives in the “cat corner,” a small mission-control area: Original cat art from our collection A poster by renowned feline illustrator Louis Wain Cat calendar & bulletin board Self-cleaning litter pod and step stool Odor-absorbing charcoal step Large litter mat Litter It’s practical and slightly whimsical — a space dedicated to their needs. Lumi treats the pod like advanced technology. She watches the rotation cycle with fascination. Otto observes with less drama but equal curiosity. After 15 years of cat wisdom, I’m still delighted by what captures their attention. Sometimes enrichment looks like a toy. Sometimes it looks like vertical space. And sometimes it looks like a self-cleaning litter box that rotates in the corner. That’s life. Cat’s life. Disclosure: The Neakasa M1 Plus self-cleaning litter pod and step stool were gifted for review. (This post contains my honest experience.) Learn more:neakasa Their site also features videos and user examples, which are fun to watch if you’re curious about how other cats interact with the system. Lumi’s paws-on-the-rim ritual and post-business inspection is hysterical. It captures exactly what I mean by adventure — not mountains or expeditions, but curiosity in everyday objects. Otto is equally obsessed with their new out of this world adventure pod. One of the top concerns of cat owners are litter box issues. Who knew a litter box can be so fascinating and attractive to cats? Note: This is a luxury item and not a requirement for good cat care. Automated systems can be wonderful tools for some households, but they are not universal solutions. Cats differ in temperament, sensitivity, and preference. Some adapt immediately; others require gradual introduction; and some will always prefer traditional boxes. All of those responses are normal. Good enrichment is about meeting the individual cat’s needs. You may also enjoy our post about Winter Cat Care Do you have a self-cleaning litter box? Does Your Cat Love You? Astrology Answers How your cat shows affection, according to their zodiac sign. Valentine Love is in the air and I thought it would be fun to explore cat astrology (a favorite topic here for 15 years). Hello, Cupid! Cats may not send Valentine cards ( okay, some do) but make no mistake: when a cat loves you, it’s written in the stars. ✨ Each zodiac sign has its own way of expressing affection—and yes, that includes dramatic gestures, emotional intensity, and the occasional “gift” you never asked for. Here’s how to tell if your cat is truly, cosmically devoted to you. ⸻ ARIES (Mar 20 – Apr 19) ♈️ “IF IT MOVES, IT’S ASKING TO BE CHASED!” Quick-witted, lightning fast, and outrageously impetuous, these adorable little devils are always plotting their next escape. Aries cats must explore—and yes, they usually come back. Often with an offering. 🐦 Neighborhood birds beware: Aries kitties show affection by providing. Whether it’s a toy, a sock, or something… formerly alive, your Aries cat is just helping out with dinner. Love, Aries-style, is bold, physical, and occasionally alarming. ⸻ TA**US (Apr 20 – May 20) ♉️ “BODY CONTACT, PLEASE.” If you find yourself tripping over your cat half the time, congratulations—you’ve been claimed by a Taurean. Physical closeness is everything to these sensuous souls. They’ll rub, lean, sprawl, and press themselves against you whenever possible. Ta**us cats love through touch, comfort, and routine. If they’ve chosen you as their favorite piece of furniture, take it as the highest compliment. ⸻ GEMINI (May 21 – Jun 20) ♊️ “TALK TO ME!” Clever Gemini, perched on the windowsill, loves to watch the world—and then report on it. A bit of a gossip, these mercurial felines keep those they love up to date with ceaseless commentary that may (or may not) test your patience. They’re waiting for you to answer. Your Gemini cat initiates intimacy through conversation—and play—often dropping their favorite toy at your feet like punctuation. ⸻ CANCER (Jun 21 – Jul 22) ♋️ “DON’T LEAVE ME.” From the living room to the kitchen and back again, you’re being shadowed by one of the most attentive cats imaginable. Cancerian companions are loath to leave you alone for more than a moment. Yes, you’re a meal ticket—but more importantly, you’re family. In your Moon-ruled cat’s eyes, you’re bonded for life. Married, even. Until death do you part. ⸻ LEO (Jul 23 – Aug 22) ♌️ “LOOK AT ME.” Whether it’s a dramatic belly display or a perfectly timed tail swish, Leo cats are masters of the spotlight. These natural performers know exactly how to command attention—and expect it. But don’t be fooled: Leos don’t lavish affection lightly. If you’ve earned their devotion, they’ll reward you with theatrical purring and radiant warmth. Applause encouraged. ⸻ VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sep 22) ♍️ “I’M OKAY. YOU’RE OKAY.” If your cat insists on occupying your lap with quiet determination, chances are you live with a Virgo. Finicky about tastes, smells, and standards, these cats don’t give their trust easily. Which is why the highest compliment a Virgo cat can offer is simple: they see you as an extension of themselves. Clean, acceptable, approved. ⸻ LIBRA (Sep 23 – Oct 22) ♎️ “DO YOU COME HERE OFTEN?” Self-possessed and socially adept, Libran cats are feline charmers. They’ll greet guests, supervise gatherings, and glide through the room with ease. Still, their deepest affection is reserved just for you. Ruled by Venus, these furry romantics send subtle kitty kisses, soft glances, and elegant cuddles. Return the compliment—it’s only fair. ⸻ SCORPIO (Oct 23 – Nov 21) ♏️ “WHAT ARE THE NEIGHBORS REALLY UP TO?” Sultry, intense, and fiercely loyal, the Scorpio cat is emotionally expressive and deeply protective. Naturally suspicious, these feline detectives take it upon themselves to monitor everything—and everyone. If you wake in the middle of the night with a mysterious weight on your chest, don’t panic. It’s just your personal bodyguard, watching over you while you sleep. ⸻ SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 20)♐️ “HOW DO YOU SAY THAT IN HUMAN?” Super-intelligent, gregarious, and prone to philosophical moods, Sagittarius cats are bundles of contradiction. They listen intently to those they love—and then offer commentary. They’ll purr in agreement, meow in skepticism, and scratch nearby surfaces when expressing dissent. At times, you’ll swear they actually understand every word you say. And honestly? They probably do. ⸻ CAPRICORN (Dec 21 – Jan 19) ♑️ “WE DON’T HAVE ALL DAY.” Capricorn is the zodiac’s master organizer, and the Capricorn cat is no different. They wake you just before your alarm, supervise your routine, and expect punctuality. When you return home, they’ll be waiting—reliable as ever. If they disapprove of your friends or romantic interests, take note. Capricorn cats always know the score before you do. ⸻ AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18) ♒️ “I COULD DO THAT.” Whether you’re baking cookies or brushing your teeth, your Aquarius cat observes with cool fascination. Independent and clever, they inspire you to be on your best behavior—whether you realize it or not. At times you’ll wonder if they’re keeping track of your successes and failures. They are. And yes, it’s because they care. ⸻ PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 19) ♓️ “WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?” Exotic, glamorous, and seemingly blessed with every advantage, Pisces cats are the dreamers of the zodiac. Beneath the beauty lies a sensitive, complicated heart. Fear of abandonment can lead to dramatic moments (hiding, biting, or vanishing entirely), but make no mistake: this devoted companion genuinely misses you when you’re gone—and won’t truly relax until you’re safely home. At home, Otto and Lumi are getting along beautifully—so much so that one could almost call Lumi Otto’s new girlfriend. She’s still keeping him guessing (princesses do have standards), but it’s been a joy to watch their bond unfold. Wherever you are, I hope this season brings you a love match of the two-legged or four-legged kind. Not sure what sign your cat is? Read Cat astrology
