As it's the start of Chinese New Year I thought it the perfect time to share one of the more unusual jobs I do. Making wooden sockets to hold the eyes of lion masks, used to perform ceremonial dances. Scott's work is fantastic and the masks are handmade using traditionally authentic techniques. You can see more examples on his instagram page, wo_lei_si. https://www.instagram.com/wo_lei_si?igsh=MWxsZ2oxazIxaW5paw== Links in comments.

We don't usually pyrograph winners names onto our trophies, but Malton School is local so it was a pleasure to visit them in person. They have a lot of trophies to update!

I always enjoy making personalised gifts, especially for the Forestry Commission. This is for a retirement, a large wall clock, made from oak.

This is a large trophy with a very interesting back story. It was commissioned by Sue, in Suffolk to remember her Grandfather who was a teacher at the school in Guernsey when World War 2 broke out and these are her words explaining why.
"The trophy will be presented in July to a Year 6 pupil who demonstrates the values that were so important for my grandfather. After my grandfather evacuated the school to Lymm area near Oldham- he then became ill and died at the age of 39! Leaving my father as a young boy of 11 without his dad. It was only when my father died a couple of years ago that we realised all the full details of the story. This also included all the names and addresses of where the evacuees were sent to! I visited the school last summer in a very moving visit to Guernsey. Thats when I met the headteacher and we offered to provide this cup."

I performed my first live demonstration this week, for Ryedale Woodturners, where I made a child's stool with a pyrographed and coloured image on the seat. You can watch the video at https://youtu.be/GoPm9L9bJ1k if you wish. Pinocchio seemed the obvious choice for an audience of woodturners!

Cricket season is coming. My Dad first made a trophy with flying wickets, bails and a ball back in 2010. It has been one of our most popular designs since. The other two choices in this group compliment it quite well, all have brass engraving plaques attached.

A gavel and striking plate is a traditional turned wooden item, this one has been decorated with some masonic pyrography at the lodges request. It's a pleasure to make items that are both practical and decorative at the same time. This also reminds me of a prop I used to repair regularly when working for the displays department of The York Dungeon 10 years ago!!
