TIME TO SPRING CLEAN!
Well, it looks as if spring is here at last!
After being cooped up in a stuffy house all winter, it’s finally time to fling open the windows and let in the bright spring sunshine.
Unfortunately this is when you notice the dust, grime and everyday soiling that has permeated your home during the dark days of winter. It’s now time to shoo away the cobwebs and take on your annual spring clean, but where do you start?
Washing down paintwork, de-cluttering and dusting are tasks that can easily be accomplished by most people, but what about the cleaning of your soft furnishings?
It doesn't take very much of the new season's sunlight to show up the spots and stains which have splattered your carpets and upholstery over the past few months. That lovely Axminster/Wilton carpet seems to have acquired some added features to its pattern and your three-piece-suite is definitely a shade darker than it was last year…
SO, WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?
Don’t be tempted to try and clean your soft furnishings yourself. Cleaning carpets and upholstery is not a particularly easy job to do and it is very easy to make mistakes resulting in costly and irreparable damage. After buying your house and car, one of the next largest investments you will make is for your soft furnishings, so why put them at risk?
If they are looking decidedly grubby and you want to get them clean again, then the best thing to do is to call in a professional carpet and upholstery cleaning service who will be able to restore their pleasing appearance without causing any damage.

UPHOLSTERY CLEANING - AFTERCARE ADVICE
As with carpets, if you have your upholstery professionally cleaned, there are some ‘do’s’ and ‘don’ts’ you will need to follow in order to get the best from your newly cleaned soft furnishings, and to avoid causing damage whilst the items are drying. These are:
THE 'DO'S'...
1) DO all you can to assist the drying speed of the newly cleaned item/s. Weather permitting, leave windows and internal doors open. During the winter months keep the room warm by using your heating system.
2) DO stand the seating cushions on their ends (this will air and dry them on either side simultaneously).
THE ‘DON’TS’…
1) DON’T place cushions from a freshly cleaned suite against radiators to dry them. This can cause heat setting marks, particularly in pile velour fabrics.
2) DON’T place seating cushions back onto the suite until they are fully dry, as some upholstery tags, labels and linings can contain loose dyes.

CARPET CLEANING - AFTERCARE ADVICE
If you have your carpet professionally cleaned, there are some 'do’s' and 'don’ts' you will need to follow in order to get the best from your freshly cleaned floor covering, and to avoid causing damage whilst it is drying. These are:
THE 'DO'S'...
1) DO all you can to assist the drying speed of the newly cleaned item/s. Weather permitting, leave internal doors and windows open. During the winter months keep the room warm by using your heating system.
(Note: Drying times can vary greatly depending on different factors, i.e. fibre content, pile density, degree of soiling, method of cleaning, room temperature, humidity and air circulation).
2) DO take care when stepping from a damp carpet onto a hard surface, i.e. kitchen or bathroom floor. The moisture picked up on your feet can make these surfaces slippery.
THE 'DON'TS'...
1) DON'T walk on newly cleaned carpet in outdoor shoes whilst it is still damp, the dirt will transfer onto the carpet fibres. Likewise do not wear coloured socks or slippers, as the dyes may transfer leaving permanent stains.
2) DON'T remove the carpet protectors that your cleaner has placed beneath your furniture until you are sure that the carpet is absolutely dry. If they are removed whilst the carpet is still damp, wood staining from furniture legs or rust from the metal studs may transfer onto the carpet leaving permanent stains.

DEALING WITH MILDEW ON CARPETS AND UPHOLSTERY
Mildew is a fungus growth that has the appearance of an irregular stain. Its colour usually ranges from grey to black, although it can also be yellow, orange or red. A musty odour can often be detected.
Mildew is usually found in warm, damp, dark areas (ultraviolet light will destroy it), however it can be found anywhere where there is an ingress of water that has not been treated properly, or has been present for some time without detection.
THE EFFECTS OF MILDEW ON CARPET
Any carpet which has jute, cotton, rayon, silk or wool in its construction or has accompanying underlay which contains organic material will, in the right environmental conditions, provide the ideal habitat for mildew to grow.
A mildew problem that has been left for some time can result in dry rot; this is because it has been digesting the organic matter in the backing of the carpet. A good example of this is when a flower pot (which has been resting on a carpet) is watered and the water is spilled over the carpet for an extended period. Once this happens it cannot be reversed. Little can be done when the dry rot has set in.
THE EFFECTS OF MILDEW ON UPHOLSTERY FABRICS
Mildew usually attacks cellulose fibres such as cotton and linen, which are derived from plants. It is also likely to grow on other natural fabrics and materials such as wool, silk, and leather. Synthetic fibres such as polyester, nylon, and acrylic, generally resist mildew, but if these fabrics are soiled and exposed to warm, damp conditions they too can be attacked by mildew. The stains on the fabric attract the fungus, and moisture and warmth aid its growth.
When mildew starts to grow on a fabric, it interlaces around the yarns, and eventually grows into individual fibres. The growth shows up as dark, irregularly shaped stains. The fabric takes on a musty odour, and the growth eventually deteriorates the fibres to the point of rotting. Depending on the length of time mildew has been allowed to grow and the fibre damage it has caused, complete restoration of mildewed fabrics may not be possible. Even if the stains can be completely removed, the fabric may be weakened to the extent that it will fall apart.
SO… HOW CAN YOU AVOID THE DAMAGING EFFECTS OF MILDEW ON YOUR SOFT FURNISHINGS?
Early detection and eradication of mildew is essential in avoiding the degradation of your carpets and upholstery fabrics.
Keeping your soft furnishings clean is of the utmost importance. A professional carpet and upholstery cleaning service will be able to help you with a mildew problem if tackled early on.

AVOIDING D.I.Y CLEANING DISASTERS
There is nothing quite like the look and smell of a freshly cleaned carpet, especially after our centrally heated houses have been closed to the elements during winter and the dust, grime and everyday soiling within our homes has become firmly embedded in our soft furnishings.
Professional carpet and upholstery cleaning is affordable but, unfortunately, some people choose instead to ‘Do-It-Themselves’, often with disastrous results.
The concept that it is “easy to clean carpets and upholstery” has been led by various sections of the popular media and manufacturers/suppliers of cleaning machines designed for use in the home. But the fact is that carpet and upholstery cleaning is not as easy as you may think.
Over the years there have been many reported cases of D.I.Y disasters. In more recent years some of these have involved the use of ‘steam machines’ which can be purchased in many of the retail chain stores throughout the country. The intense heat generated by these machines can cause the twists within the yarn in twist-pile carpets (which are heat-set during manufacture) to become unwound leaving the carpet looking very old and the pile felted. There have also been incidences of damage to upholstery where the fabric pile has become badly distorted and heat-set into a new position.
Additionally some other home-use carpet and upholstery cleaning systems, which utilise some form of extraction equipment, unfortunately instruct the user to add chemical cleaning solution to the clean water tank, the result being that the cleaned items are not properly rinsed and chemical residues are left behind.
Rinsing is a fundamental part of the cleaning process. Think about it, if you were informed that your D.I.Y cleaning process could very possibly leave behind a cocktail of chemicals in your soft furnishings - Phosphates (containing Phosphoric Acid), Polycarboxylates, Non-Ionic Surfactant Perfumes, Cyclodextrin (odour eliminator), Quaternary Ammonium Chloride (anti-microbial), alcohol, Sodium Polymethacrylate, Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate (an anionic surfactant) to name but a few - you would be horrified… wouldn’t you?
Well, believe it or not, the above chemicals are listed as elements within some of the D.I.Y carpet cleaning solutions… scary isn’t it!
Chemical residues left behind in your soft furnishings following a cleaning process can cause rapid re-soiling. More worryingly, however, un-rinsed chemicals can be detrimental to your health and well-being causing rashes, breathing problems and the worsening of existing allergies.
Don't put your soft-furnishings and health at risk, Get a professional carpet and upholstery cleaning company.

FORGOTTEN SPILLAGES
Sometimes stains on carpets and soft furnishings can go unnoticed, only revealing themselves after professional cleaning has taken place.
SO… WHY IS THIS?
This is because some spillages do not immediately cause discolouration. Spillages (containing colourless sugar) that are not dealt with properly can, after long exposure to the air, develop into stubborn brown stains. These stains can then remain hidden by the accumulated soil covering them, only making their presence known following the cleaning process when the general soiling is removed. In fact, some of these stains may turn even darker as a result of the necessary drying action that inevitably follows a thorough clean.
A professional carpet and upholstery cleaning company will be able to utilise speciality cleaning and stain removal treatments to improve the appearance of forgotten drink spills, such as cola, coffee, tea, alcoholic beverages, and many others. But, even with the best treatments, coloured residue or caramelized sugar staining resulting from a spillage can sometimes remain.
REMEMBER… accidents WILL happen, but you are much more likely to prevent a spillage becoming a permanent stain if you tackle it straight away.
SO, WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO IF A SPILLAGE OCCURS?
1. DO NOT ignore the spillage.
2. DO NOT panic. A panic attempt at removal could be seriously detrimental to your carpets and upholstery. Grabbing the first piece of cloth and cleaning solution that comes to hand and vigorously rubbing the offending area could succeed in, not only spreading the spillage, but actually damaging your soft furnishings.
3. DO contact a professional carpet and upholstery cleaning company immediately if the stain persists.

WHY SHOULD I PAY TO HAVE MY CARPET PROFESSIONALLY CLEANED?
Not surprisingly, having your carpet thoroughly cleaned by a professional carpet cleaning company costs more than renting a shampooer and attempting to do the job yourself.
If you bought the cheapest carpeting you could find, then renting a small shampooer might be all you need. No question, it will get out some of the dirt - but the key word here is ‘some’. It will not remove the grease or oil-based soiling, allergens, dust mites or many of the contaminants that can cause your carpet to wear out prematurely. Using these machines incorrectly has also been known to cause irreversible damage.
If you want your carpet to look good and give you years of dependable service, then you need to take care of it properly. This means you need to have it regularly deep cleaned (at least once every two years) by a professional carpet cleaning company with the equipment and skills to do job properly and without causing damage.
Next to the house and the car, the carpeting within your home is one of the most expensive items you'll purchase. Don't put it at risk by trying to clean it yourself, get a professional cleaning company to do the job for you. Call 07895331349 for a quote.
