Live fire testing and slow motion video shows problems you can’t find with the gun on the bench. Top lever springs were very weak and H bars in need of replacing.

Once again I’m humbled by this chaps skills. Over the course of this year I’ve been working on this bespoke project which has been a long time in the planning by the client, one aspect of this build has been a skeleton heal plate. For the last few weeks I’ve been wondering how the engraver would approach the heal plate; I wasn’t sure if it’s curving lines would be at odds with the Celtic style the client had chosen. Needless to say I can stop worrying. More posts on this project to come as things slowly come together. My thanks to the client and to for his artistry once again you’ve exceeded all expectations. ❤️

Trade job from last l year this old pape had a hard life, I removed the stock extension and put a passably better one on, I then took the worst of the damage out the stock repicking the drop points and recutting the checkering to give it a hint of its former refinement, the old wood came alive with a bit of love and oil.

Even on factory stocks there is quite a lot of scope for change and modification, this was an English game gun conversion I carried out on a standard silver pigeon grade 1 last year. Light, fast handing, elegant and without the extra bulk and bullnosed lines of a factory stock.

Simple refinish/rechecker job, the stock was worn dry and marked with little to no finish or checkering remaining sometimes on older guns Im not too concerned about removing every mark, sometimes the barrels and action show signs of their age and use and I think a few blemishes on the stock can be part of a guns story and charm. An immaculate stock on a worn out gun can have something of lipstick on a pig. Sometimes old things should look a bit old, sometimes it’s striking a balance between old and neglected and old and treasured.

This forend was part of a light restoration project returned before the Christmas break, a nice westley Richard gold name that had had a bit of a hard life belonging to a local gamekeeper, I tidied up the wood which was very worn on the forend from slightly abrasive wool gloves over a lengthy period with a bit of refinishing work and recutting the checkering, adjusting the latch, it ended up looking a bit more respectable once again

A bit of lockwork polishing carried out to our customers request, the original jeweling on this lock work was a bit messy, it had rusted up and was applied over the top of poorly prepared surfaces, to clean up and re jewel required polishing off the old jeweling which revealed that there was hardly a flat surface on the lockwork. It’s all cosmetic of course but it does give us bright flat surfaces to work back to when it’s next serviced.

Probably one of my favourite refinish jobs of last year showing team at its best, a regular at the ground bought this gun at auction bringing it into the workshop with a cheeky grin “ I just got carried away” , a mine field if ever there was one, but fortunately he got a good one, seeking advice from myself and max he committed to a full restoration; the wood turned out better than we could ever have hoped, and the sale achieved was five times the auction price selling very quickly. Someone gained a stunning gun still at a great price, the customer made a tidy profit and we got to save this stunning gun from being overlooked ever again. A little knowledge can be worth a quid or two. So often work doesn’t go ahead when the cost of the hours starts to exceed the value of the gun but this was a win for everyone

It’s not beautiful, it’s not exciting, but servicing your gun is important to stop failures and breakages ruining your special days in the field. I have availability for end of season servicing now, guns can be left at the workshop through the week or next door for my attention. Don’t leave problems to fester in your cabinet

Client delivered this gun in a super smart leather motor case, when I opened the case my face fell words can’t aptly describe the utilitarian plank that served for a stock, no graceful lines, no thought to ergonomics, simply a wooden handle. Customer chose the blank, and desired to convert from straight hand stock to this semi pistol type stock, made to his measurements, it’s always hard to fit these stock making jobs in around the daily repairs and servicing but I’m thrilled with the result.
