This is a bit of an emotional one for me.

I don’t know how many people know how I actually started Fivetone Cabinetry. During COVID, the company I was working for had to put us on hold because of the lockdowns, so I came up with the idea of making acrylic sneeze screens for shops and bars out of a garage my landlord let me use behind my flat in Bristol. I realised I could cut acrylic using my track saw and palm router, so I just started making them.

People would ask how long I’d been doing it, and I’d say, “Well… I’m actually a cabinet maker.” Suddenly I started getting asked about wardrobes, alcove units and built-in furniture.

One of the first people to trust me with a full built-in piece were my good friends Eeva and Clayton. They wanted a huge birch plywood wardrobe with drawers, lift-up doors, cut-out handles… all the things that have since become a massive part of my style. Painted doors in two different colours, matching doors to hide the consumer unit, loads of awkward details. At the time it felt enormous, especially building it out of a garage with no bench and only a handful of tools, although I had managed to invest in a few Festool bits while working my old job.

Today Eeva sent me the Rightmove listing because they’re selling the flat, and seeing those photos genuinely stopped me for a second. The wardrobe still looks exactly how it did the day I fitted it nearly six years ago.

Now, almost six years to the day, I’ve just moved into a new workshop that’s going to house a collective of makers. I’ve got a huge amount of space, access to some incredible machinery, and I’m still here making birch plywood furniture.

It’s strange looking back at where it all started.

A job from last year that never made it onto the grid. Hallway storage for Karen and Andy, the third project I’ve completed in their home following their wardrobes and utility room.

This one was all about making awkward spaces work hard. A boiler cabinet with integrated storage below, built in maple plywood with painted tulipwood frames and shaker doors to tie in with the rest of the house.

The understairs unit was a nice challenge. Maple plywood carcass with shaker drawer fronts and carefully considered clearances so the main drawer runs cleanly past the bottom step. Finished with my go-to cut out handle detail to keep everything clean and consistent.

To finish it off, an oak veneered bookshelf with an angled frame and a discreet door to hide pipework and the water tank. A tricky one to tie in, but carrying the same design language and colour palette across all three areas brings everything together into one cohesive run.

Sometimes the best part of a project is seeing it actually being used.

I popped back to Sophie and Teresa’s today to check measurements for their upcoming kitchen and finally saw these four birch plywood alcove units properly filled with books and records.

The units stretch between the open plan living and dining space and were spray finished by .j.hunt.and.sons.ltd The faces are painted while the edges and handle details still show the natural layers of the birch plywood.

The shelving layout follows a brickwork pattern. It adds visual interest but also strengthens the shelves across the span, which is especially important when they are holding heavy vinyl records.

The TV is hidden behind bifold doors on a pull out bracket so it can disappear completely when not in use.

All the open shelves were installed using a combination of Dominos and Lamello Divarios, keeping fixings hidden and making installation manageable as a solo installer.

Great to see them already filled and part of the home.

Managed to absolutely destroy my blade by smashing it into a screw.

After posting about how I've had a stressful couple of weeks and this was the icing on the cake, and their team sent me a spare blade - no fuss, no charge. Just “we’ve got you.”

Running a small business can feel pretty solitary at times, so gestures like that genuinely mean a lot.

Grateful to be part of a trade where people look out for each other.

Thank you guys. Alastair has always been kind and helpful when I've reached out to him and he provides a huge amount of information and transparency on how to run a successful cabinetry business, something I've used and referenced since starting on my own.

After years of saying “I’ll do ours next”, I finally built a wardrobe for me and my wife — something that only became possible once we bought our first house at the end of August.

Birch plywood carcasses finished in Osmo Amber, with the exposed end grain used deliberately as a feature throughout. Yellow doors and drawer fronts were lacquered and detailed with cut-out handles, finished with birch ply inserts. All running on soft-close hardware.

The colour palette was chosen for its warmth and a clear nod to 70s interiors, while keeping the construction clean, practical, and built to last.

Making furniture for yourself is oddly harder than making it for clients… but this one was worth the wait.

Lou and Johnny’s bespoke wardrobe

This built-in wardrobe measures 2.6 m wide by 2.4 m tall. It features painted tulipwood shaker-style doors with classic ogee moulding detail, finished in a soft green spray by .j.hunt.and.sons.ltd . A traditional cornice completes the top for a timeless built-in look.

Inside, the carcass is oak-veneered MDF with solid oak lippings, treated with oil to showcase the natural grain. Storage includes adjustable shelving, a pull-down hanging rail with soft-shut mechanism, and generous space designed to suit the room perfectly.

A practical and elegant solution for classic interiors.

Tim & Julie’s alcove units all finished up.
Adjustable shelves, space for the record player & stereo, vinyl storage, firewood compartments in oak-veneered MDF, and oak-lipped maple drawers on Blum soft-close runners — plenty of storage packed into these two alcoves.

Finished in Hague Blue (sprayed by .j.hunt.and.sons.ltd ) with the oak giving it a nice bit of warmth and contrast. Just the black sockets to go in and it’s complete

Just wrapped up this 2.7m built-in bookcase and desk for Josh, following his giant green wardrobe before Christmas.

Painted pink with a solid walnut desktop, it features walnut and maple box-joint soft close drawers, fluted frame details, and a classic cornice. Flexible LED lighting is tucked behind the shelve frames activated by a discreet motion sensor for a seamless finish. A bold but functional addition to the space.

Sprayed as always by .j.hunt.and.sons.ltd

Had a great day at Ruskin Mill, an alternative, independent specialist education provision for young people with additional needs that helps them learn through hands-on craft, woodwork, metalwork, and more. I talked about cabinetmaking, the materials and tools I use, and how I design with SketchUp. Really rewarding to see their interest and creativity—who knows, maybe a future maker in the mix!

Also kept my social story they made to explain to the students what I do, that's definitely going up in the workshop!
