This is a bit of an emotional one for me.
I don’t know how many people know how I actually started Fivetone Cabinetry. During COVID, the company I was working for had to put us on hold because of the lockdowns, so I came up with the idea of making acrylic sneeze screens for shops and bars out of a garage my landlord let me use behind my flat in Bristol. I realised I could cut acrylic using my track saw and palm router, so I just started making them.
People would ask how long I’d been doing it, and I’d say, “Well… I’m actually a cabinet maker.” Suddenly I started getting asked about wardrobes, alcove units and built-in furniture.
One of the first people to trust me with a full built-in piece were my good friends Eeva and Clayton. They wanted a huge birch plywood wardrobe with drawers, lift-up doors, cut-out handles… all the things that have since become a massive part of my style. Painted doors in two different colours, matching doors to hide the consumer unit, loads of awkward details. At the time it felt enormous, especially building it out of a garage with no bench and only a handful of tools, although I had managed to invest in a few Festool bits while working my old job.
Today Eeva sent me the Rightmove listing because they’re selling the flat, and seeing those photos genuinely stopped me for a second. The wardrobe still looks exactly how it did the day I fitted it nearly six years ago.
Now, almost six years to the day, I’ve just moved into a new workshop that’s going to house a collective of makers. I’ve got a huge amount of space, access to some incredible machinery, and I’m still here making birch plywood furniture.
It’s strange looking back at where it all started.
