A 1 day community festival celebrating the rich diversity of life in Ancoats. That pays tribute to it’s heritage and allows us to ask questions of how we wish to shape it’s future. Ancoats is currently a place of great social upheaval. As developers rebuild the historic core of Manchester’s Industrial Revolution. Regeneration sees a new young upwardly mobile metropolitan elite move into an area wh
ich displaces the old working class community. Whilst acknowledging the tensions that exist in an area of development and change, the festival will pay tribute to the original Ancoats Community and celebrate their rich and continuing contribution to the city. This is exemplified by the Community action and cohesion that saved a legendary Manchester Land mark. A symbol of compassion, community values, expertise, ideas, excellence and support for all in the community; Ancoats Dispensary. The festival is a platform to educate about the Ancoats cradle as the focal point of the first industrial revolution and how this history (of the Dispensary) and values are relevant to the present and must be adopted to shape the future of our city. We will celebrate the contribution of the Irish Community to the area; how for very little the mills were built, roads and canals were dug. How this was all thrown into a melting pot in the 19th century. By different voices and diverse groups. This narrative is the stitching to connect the musical, food, art and other offers to make a rich social tapestry. In which differences are forgotten and friendships made.
