A beautiful bespoke solid oak memorial bench with brass plaques. Created to commemorate the life of an engineer and adventurer. Carefully machined ergonomic angles contrast with the natural waney edges of the oak, a quiet nod to both precision engineering and the untamed landscapes of adventure. Designed and made by me, the bench is long enough for family to sit together, sharing memories and reflecting on a wonderful life.

Hey! I thought it had been a while since I introduced myself. I’m Tab van der Lande, a Furniture Designer Maker based in London.
I design and make bespoke pieces from solid wood, working directly with clients to make their dreams a reality.
My passion for working with wood started from a young age with a desire to work with my hands. I went on a spoon carving course which gave me a deeper understanding of wood and its grain. The satisfaction of starting with a log and ending in a soft tactile product was amazing. I then went to a talk at The Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft hosted by Sebastian Cox.
After being inspired to get in a workshop Seb offered me an internship and then went on to offer me an apprenticeship. I studied Architectural Bench Joinery at The Building Crafts College. I learnt how to draw and make traditional doors, windows, aches and staircases using hand tools.
I completed my apprenticeship and went from Apprentice Furniture Designer Maker to Lead Furniture Designer Maker, CNC Operator, Apprentice Supervisor and Head of Mainternance during my 7 years at Sebastian Cox Ltd.
I was designing and making fine hardwood furniture to tight deadlines, both bespoke one-off pieces like tree houses and beds along with batches of products including chairs and bedside tables.
I worked on and made furniture that has been in an exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum, in The British Film Institute and in magazines such as Elle Decoration and Dezeen. Along with pieces in hotels, private gardens, The Chelsea Flower Show, Aesop stores and Crabtree & Evelyn shops. As well as many pieces for interior designers and private homes.
I learnt a lot in my 7 years. It gave be the confidence to begin my journey to design and make things for my own clients.
I became a Freeman of The Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers. I met so many like-minded young makers and industry experts. It gave me a sense of community. That community has supported me through my 8 years in industry.
I am now working at The Royal College of Art during term time. My role as a technician involves helping MA Level students design and make one off pieces, using a range of materials.

Over a year ago I became a Freeman of The Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers’ which was a great ceremony. In the same year I was invited to attend The Masters Installation Dinner. This was an evening to remember and the most formal event I have attended. The dinner was at Mansion House with The Lord Mayor. It was a white tie event so dressing in a black tailcoat, white waistcoat, white winged collar shirt, white bowtie and the shiniest back shoes was fun.
I got a photo with Jonny the Clerk and CEO of The Furniture Markers’ Company in our white tie. I also met Helen from !

A couple of techniques used to prevent timber for cracking / splitting further and also stabilising knots. The two techniques here are a brass ring inlayed to make a feature out of the knot and make it look more considered. The second technique is more traditional, it is the use of butterflies or bowties. These wedge shaped pieces of wood are preventing the cracks in the wood widening over time, I chose the size, species and location of each butterfly, these were all carefully considered as not to clutter the table top but enough to support the natural defects. This was a beautiful London plane table top with walnut and oak butterflies.

I made this trike as a very special gift for my goddaughter’s first birthday. I used a range of timbers including Brown Oak, Sycamore, Ash, Elm and London Plane. I cut and threaded the brass rod for the wheels and laser engraved her name on the seat. It was so much fun making this piece.
I have previously made one for my grandmother to make memories with her great grandchildren. Images at the end.

I had the pleasure of making a bespoke presentation board for a wedding present. I made the piece from a board of oak which I machined and sliced into strips and then again into blocks to create an end grain board. End grain boards are better for knives over a board that is made with side grain. Timber end grain is essentially a collection of straws, theses straws move out the way of the knife edge when used. On a side grain board the knife cuts the straw across the board width and damaged the wood and the knife edge. I finished the board with a light chamfer and routed indents for handles. This piece was fun to make and a long lasting memory of the day with their name and wedding date carved into the sides.

In July I did my first market, it was in Suffolk over one of the hottest weekends. I learnt so much and I am very grateful to the other stall holders who gave me really good advice and feedback from their years of experience. It was so nice to interact with so many people either from the craft industry or customers looking for a unique handmade item.
I did my second market this today, this one was a village Christmas Market near Bury St Edmunds. It was a great day and good market definitely got people in the Christmas spirit!

I made this coffee table from a piece of timber that was found in a pond and it had been there for many years. I carefully machined the board revealing the most interesting gran and colours. I sanded the natural waney edge of the timber to keep its character. Due to the nature of the wood quite fragile I reinforced the parts that were cracked or splitting. I used a traditional technique which are know by a few names such as bowties, butterflies, dovetail keys or dutchman joint. I decided to use a range of timbers to make the butterflies as the colours matched well with the colours in the rest of the table. I made one leg from the off cut of the wooden board and the second leg I made for some oak offcuts. I wanted to make a leg that was able to add support split in the table top but was not something your eye was drawn to. I enjoyed making this piece as it was more of an experimental pieces and not something I am used to making. Designed and made by me.

This bespoke rippled oak cabinet has a limed finish. The process of liming oak involves making an alkali solution from water and lime powder. The solution reacts with the tannins in the oak which are acidic making the oak darken. The rippled door I made by programming the C.N.C. machine to cut the smooth curves.
The cabinet was then finishes with push to open door mechanisms, chunky turned oak dowel legs

This bespoke Products of Silviculture Bedside table is made from hazel and oak. The bespoke element of this piece is the addition of a drawer. The drawer has hand cut dovetails by me, the only piece that currently exists with my very own hand cut in hardwood half blind dovetails. Half blind dovetails means they are not visible from one side, the ones are not visible from the front. It was such a pleasure to use hand tools to make these joints as opposed to a router and template. Designed by made by me.
