Over twelve months ago we bought a ‘pile of pieces’ that had been buried away in a local store, forgotten for years. A lengthy reconstruction project followed and we’re delighted with the result, this wonderful eighteenth century Louis XVI fireplace of elegant and restrained design. Further research followed and we now believe the central gilt-bronze bas-relief which depicts an allegory of astronomy to be by Parisienne bronseur Etienne Martincourt. Keen observers will note the similarities between this and the panel on one of Jean Henri Riesener’s greatest masterpieces, the Jewel Cabinet made in 1787 for the Comtesse de Provence’s bedroom at Versailles. It was later sold at sale of George Watson-Taylor in 1825 to George IV for use at Windsor Castle, where the cabinet remains until this day.

A number of new pieces groped together – to the rear stands an early nineteenth century Kilkenny Fossil fireplace, a wonderful and strict Irish Georgian design, barely discernible and ontop of this is a bronzed plaster plaque of a Whippet by revered Italian plaster-caster, Domenico Brucciani. To the front is a richly patinated eighteenth century cockpen armchair, smartly dressed in black horsehair, and a mahogany tilt-top table with wonderful shimmering palmwood crossbanding to the edge. All online, further details and photos can be found on the website

A gathering of pieces that have arrived recently into the shop – early nineteenth century Belgian Black marble chimneypiece in the Neo-Grecian style that was popular at that time (preferred after the extravagant detail of neo-classicism), iron hobgrate in the manner of George Bullock with a wonderful oversized anthemion cresting, one of pair of nineteenth century Italian bronze Athénienne, large early eighteenth century Italian commode (ex. Holkham), small bronze of Mercury with his caduceus and a couple of Jean Gris lithographs. Keep an eye on the website for new stock that is coming in on a daily basis.
