We're proud to have contributed to the creation of a unique African landscape at Chester Zoo 🦁

As part of a conservation initiative, Chester Zoo embarked on an ambitious project to build a 6000 square metre dry rainforest habitat, aimed at protecting endangered animals from Madagascar.

We supplied Makuti and Bali thatch for roofing various areas of the enclosure, including the entrance, exit, lemur house, and fossa viewing areas.

This habitat not only provides a sanctuary for endangered species but also offers visitors an immersive experience, allowing them to get up close to ring-tailed, black, crowned, and critically endangered red ruffed lemurs.

Since moving into their new home, the lemurs have shown their approval in the form of a baby boom, a testament to the success of the project and the dedication of all involved.

All of our eucalyptus poles are plantation grown and harvested to ensure a continuous supply. Plantation growing also ensures the timbers are straight and strong.

Available in various lengths and diameters, the poles are treated with a preservative and fire retardant to ensure longevity, making them an ideal construction material for landscaping or outdoor structures.

Timber-lined and 100% waterproof, they are ideal for providing protection over queuing areas, creating a covered link between buildings or as a feature entrance canopy.

Built in sections using rough sawn, tanalised posts and roof timbers, our canopies and walkways feature a 45 degree pitch roof, felted and thatched with your choice of thatch tiles. The underside of the roof is lined with Cape Reed lining board for a polished finish.

Our Entrance Canopies and Walkways can be delivered in kit form, which is easy to install with no special tools required. Alternatively, let our trained installation team handle the installation for you.

Discover the story behind one of our projects: Chester Zoo's Guest Services building 🐾 A tropical-inspired visitor reception area brought to life in just 3.5 weeks.

Functionality and aesthetic appeal were equally weighted in this project. Crafted from robust Redwood posts, the design had to accommodate double-glazed windows and electronically controlled doors. The roof construction was also a key consideration: we installed a maintenance-free, long-life polyolefin thatch roof, designed to withstand the elements for over fifty years with no maintenance required.
