Quite often I get asked, “What do you do for a living?”

Because the question comes from all sorts of people — some within the industry and others completely outside of it — I’m always trying to find a straightforward answer without sounding too boring or overly technical.

Well, thanks to a current project in the Midlands for a national housebuilder, I can probably let the video do the talking, showing people the two main aspects of our business in one video.

From king post retaining walls through to sheet piled retaining solutions, this is a good snapshot of what the ESS (CE) Ltd team do day in, day out.

At ESS (CE) Ltd, we have built our reputation around king post and sheet piled retaining walls. Typically, we come in as the specialist subcontractor, deliver our scope, and work alongside other support trades for the rest.
On a current project for a repeat client, we have been asked to carry out works outside our normal scope, with works including setting out, pile platform design, platform supply and install, CBR testing and excavation works package.
This means we can keep things joined up from the start and give the client a single point of responsibility.
From experience, it’s often the gaps between trades where issues arise. By getting involved in that space, we can remove a lot of the uncertainty and help the job run smoother.

It’s a good example of how we’re happy to step beyond our usual scope where it genuinely adds value to the project.

Delighted to welcome Leech to ESS (CE) Ltd as our new Operations Manager.
This one’s a little more personal for me — I’ve known Mick for over 15 years, and I know first-hand the experience, work ethic, and straight-talking approach he brings to the table, exactly what we value at ESS.
As we continue to grow and take on more complex projects, having someone of his calibre leading operations will only strengthen our delivery across the business — from early planning through to site ex*****on.
Looking forward to working closely together again and pushing ESS forward.

Back out on site this week across projects in the North West and Midlands, carrying out follow-on fabrication works for national housebuilders. Scope included the installation of brickwork support brackets, brick tie brackets, and PFC capping beams, ensuring the retaining structures are fully integrated with the aesthetic for the preferred cladding system
These revisit packages are all part of the wider ESS (CE) Ltd service — not just installing the primary retaining system, but supporting the detail that allows the structure to look good afterwards.

As we move into the final week of February, significant progress continues on our Dudley scheme, where the team have been delivering a substantial retaining wall installation.
The structure, extending approximately 175 linear metres, incorporates retained heights of up to 5.5 metres, the wall is now well advanced with all the posts installed and the project is clearly taking shape, demonstrating the scale and engineering involved.
As part of this project, we have developed and installed a new panel system designed to enhance the finished aesthetic compared to a traditional concrete finish. The system has been integrated within the structural solution without compromising performance, offering a more refined visual outcome while maintaining durability and long-term functionality with minimal maintenance.
We would welcome feedback on the panel system and its overall appearance.

First Super League game of 2026 at the LSV and there’s just nothing like it. Walking up to the stadium with friends and family, bumping into familiar faces, that buzz in the air — you can feel the season starting before a ball’s even kicked.

There’s something special about that first home fixture — fresh season, fresh belief, blank page ready to be written. New signings, new challenges, same passion in the stands.
Grateful to be there, grateful to share it with the people who matter most.

Strange we are two weeks into 2026 and this is our first post — it’s been a busy start to the year with a high volume of new enquiries alongside side live projects progressing on site.
We’re currently delivering a king post retaining wall for a national housebuilder, in the Midlands with retained heights of up to 5.0 m and post lengths of up to 13 m. The works have required detailed planning around reduced levels and the formation of piling platforms to ensure the safe and efficient installation of the system.

This project also marks a first for us, with the introduction of an imprinted concrete finished panel being used. This approach has been selected to enhance the finished appearance of the structure while maintaining full structural performance. Further updates will follow as the works progress.

As 2025 comes to a close, it’s a good moment to reflect on a year that brought plenty of challenges but a lot to be proud of too. Grateful for our team, our families, and everyone who’s supported us along the way — and looking forward to 2026 and everything it has in store.

As we head towards the end of the year, it feels like a good moment to pause and reflect.
The first six months were very quiet and, at times, challenging — testing patience, planning and resilience across the business. But the second half of the year has shown exactly what ESS is built on. Thanks to the hard work and commitment of our staff, the continued support of our suppliers, and the trust of our clients, momentum returned and confidence grew. Seeing projects progress and teams pulling together has been a real positive. Now it’s time to take a breath, refresh, and reflect — before turning our focus to 2026 with renewed energy and ambition. Thank you to everyone who has played a part this year. It’s genuinely appreciated.

At ESS (CE) Ltd, supporting sport has become an important part of who we are as a business — not just as sponsorship, but as a genuine commitment to giving back to the communities we work in. From grassroots football and local rugby teams, to backing professional boxers and partnering with Super League rugby clubs, we’ve seen first-hand the positive impact that investment in sport can create. It builds confidence, opens opportunities, brings families together, and strengthens the towns and communities around us. For us, it’s about more than putting our logo on a shirt — it’s about supporting ambition at every level, helping people grow, and playing a small part in developing the next generation both on and off the field.
