Not woodworking, but repairs of many kinds are some of the things I enjoy most.

A bit of genuine film memorabilia (so I was told by the customer), that was sadly damaged in transit.

My painting skills are not up to this kind of artistry, but I'm fortunate to know a network of skilled people and managed find the right person for this job.

A little fixing project.

A regular customer found these drawers and decided to rescue them.

I replaced the top panel, repaired or replaced all the broken bits of drawers, some of which needed to be fully taken apart and then reassembled, scraped and sanded the whole unit, then gave it a coat of dark stain to match the other furniture in the customer's house.

A little video walk through at the end of the handrail/stairs project.

The stairs have been converted from the false closed string, to the original open string design, with new tread end nosings and decorative brackets fitted. The bottom step has been changed to a curtail step, and the new continuous handrail features a 180° wreathed turn, and ends over the curtail step with a wreathed volute.

Understairs pull out units have been added to maximise the storage potential of that space.

We hit a bit of a hiccup (the sizes which I'd transfered from the drawings were wrong) and had to start the wreaths again.

This time everything is the correct size, and now all the wreaths are rough cut, and I've started shaping the handrail profile onto them.

Several years ago I carved some wreaths and bends for a continuous handrail, today I've started another.

This false closed string staircase will be converted back to open string, with a curtail step, and continuous handrail ending in a volute.

I'll post various updates as it progresses.

Sometimes I need to fix something, not because it's cheaper than buying a replacement (it often costs a lot more in time value, than a new one would), not only because repairing is a better use of the world's resources, not only because my repairs are sometimes nicer looking and more functional than the original.

I need to fix things because taking something broken and useless and giving it value again, pushes my creativity, and gives my self calibration and regulation that I can't find in other things.

Here's a new oak handle for one of our moka pots (the other one also needs a new handle). The original plastic handles are weak at the connecting point, the new handles are reinforced with an aluminium loose tenon, epoxy glued into the oak, and the oak with it's tough interlocking grain can cope with the strains and challenges of the short grain sections.
