Forestry tools changed quickly over the years.

Some became safer, lighter and faster. Others simply became part of history.

As part of the open day, the local folk museum will be bringing a display of chainsaws through the years, alongside demonstrations of our long chainsaw in the yard.

Over the last couple of weeks, Ollie has been sharing our first experience of running oak through the larger kiln.

The good news? It worked.

The result is a workshop full of kiln-dried oak, now stacked and ready for its next project.

There's a fair bit of it sitting in the dry store at the moment, so if you're looking for oak, feel free to call in and have a browse.

Don't forget we are now open Saturday's.

People spend a lot of time choosing decking boards, but often don’t think enough about the profile itself.

The profile changes more than appearance, it affects grip, drainage, maintenance and how the deck feels underfoot over time.

Rob talks through a few of the differences between profiles and what people usually end up happiest with long term.

We're looking for a new Machine Operator & Production Operative to join the team at Logie Timber.

This role involves working across the sawmill and yard, operating machinery, handling timber and supporting production throughout the site.

But we're also looking for someone who enjoys improving the way things are done.

Someone who notices opportunities, solves problems and takes ownership of their work.

Training will be provided and previous sawmill experience is welcome, but not essential.

If you'd like to be part of a growing Scottish timber business, we'd love to hear from you.

Part 2.

After all the uncertainty going into the kiln, this was the moment we finally got to see how the hardwood had handled the cycle.

Ollie talks through what we were most concerned about beforehand, what surprised us once the packs came out, and whether we’d run hardwood through the kiln again.

Safe to say… it went better than expected.

This was the first time we’d run hardwood through the larger kiln.

Hardwood carries a lot more tension than softwood, which means there’s also a lot more that can potentially go wrong while it dries.

Ollie talks through some of the things we were watching closely before the kiln cycle even began, and why drying hardwood properly takes a very different approach.

Part 2 coming soon.

As part of our Logie 100 open day on 27 June, Ged from Gedwood will be running a hands-on green woodworking workshop here at Logie Timber Supplies.

Participants will use freshly felled timber and traditional hand tools to carve their own wooden whisky tumblers to take home.

We’ve linked a short film below showing a little of Ged’s process and the kind of work involved.

Places are limited and advance booking is required. Full details can be found through on our event page linked below:

The biggest mistake people make when choosing decking timber is usually focusing on how it looks on day one.

Outdoors, the timber still needs to handle moisture, movement and weather properly years later, not just look good the weekend it goes down.

Rob talks through two species of wood people often overlook when choosing decking timber.

We’re now open Saturdays if you want to come and compare different options properly in the yard.
