Latest upholstery commission: I loved working on these armchairs💕. They originally had a buttoned back (swipe to see before photos) but the client decided to have them upholstered with a plain back. Originally purchased from an auction house they were quite stained and the seats had started to sag and they were definitely in need of a bit of tlc. So I put in new webbing and new foam on the back and covered them in this lovely cream and blue ticking fabric called Sutton from . I think the results are gorgeous! Definitely a transformation.

Finally finished!! 🙌🏽 So this is a project I have been working on during my summer break. It was my parents 50th Wedding Anniversary last weekend and I knew I wanted to make something “gold” as a personal gift for them. So using some of the gilding processes we were taught in our first year I decided to try and transform a charity shop find into a gilded frame. I used “pastiglia” to create some moulded details on the edges of the frame. I had a few issues I wasn’t happy with but a zoom session with my gilding tutor Rian quickly solved those. So here it is! Not bad for my first attempt and my parents loved it which is the main thing. 🥰 Swipe to see some if the processes and the original frame before it was gilded.

Passing on skills is key to keeping crafts alive. I received a message this week (swipe left) from a lovely girl I gave sewing lessons to 10 years ago who is now embarking on a career path to becoming a fashion designer. I love passing on knowledge (as long as it’s up to scratch...) and to receive this out of the blue after 10 years made me a bit emotional! Hats of to all the schools, colleges and individuals passing on their skills🙌🏽

You may remember my recent college project involving the construction of a clay relief model using an image as inspiration. Well I finished as much as I could in the time we had and it has been in the kiln and is now nicely cooked and thankfully no mishaps during the firing! I was worried that some of the smaller details may not have survived but I must have stuck them down well! (Not sure “stuck them down” is the correct technical term😂). If you’re interested, the origin of this image was a larger relief panel inside a beautiful church in Venice called The Church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli. Also known as The Marble Church due to it’s construction being completely of beautiful marble. The church was built in The Renaissance period and this panel features some typical motifs of the time such as trailing foliate detail, acanthus leaves, floral decoration, garlands of corn, decorative vessels, and Griffin-like creatures! I’ve always loved history and I’m finding this part of the course so interesting. We’ll hopefully be gilding our clay tablets next term so I need to decide whether to gild some details or all of it🤔.

Hi everyone! I haven’t posted for a while so I thought I would update you as to what I have been doing! I have survived my first week at college 🙌🏽. I’m now a fully fledged full time student at the age of 48🤣. Am I mad? Probably! Is it going to be worth it? Definitely! So I’m studying for a BA(hons) in Conservation of Stone, Wood and Decorative Surfaces. This covers stone carving, wood carving, stone and wood conservation, gilding, japanning, drawing and lots of other craft modules. We will also be studying chemistry to learn the correct formulas and solutions involved in cleaning stone, plus History of Art and History of Architecture! So, very full on. Plus we will be working on pieces lent to the college by galleries, churches, museums and private clients. The teaching has been a bit different due to Covid and our class has been divided into two smaller bubbles so that we can socially distance sufficiently in the studios. All lectures are online which has worked ok so far. Our first project is learning how to model a relief image using clay. We had to construct a clay bed to a depth of 3cm. Then transfer an image onto the clay using a thin needle. Then the image was removed and the dots joined. We then learned the process of building up each area starting with the highest first to allow the different heights to be created. The image I was given is quite tricky and it’s taken a couple of days for me to get my head around the techniques but I’m happy that it is kind of resembling the image😂. Once we’ve finished, the clay will be kiln fired and we’ll be gilding sections of it in future sessions. My class is lovely and we’ve already been to the pub for drinks🍷. I hope I can make it through the three years as it’s only early days!! Finally, if you’ve made it to the end of this post😂, I want to say a massive thank you to everyone that’s supported me in my many ventures over the last few years including my most recent foray into the world of upholstery. I haven’t given up on upholstery, in fact a lot of these elements can work well alongside traditional upholstery which is definitely something I’m keeping in mind. Hopefully you’ll be interested to follow my progress and I’ll post pictures when I have something worth showing! Enjoy your weekend.###

Things I used to make Part 1: Personalised felt letters. Throwback to 2014 when I used to make these cute felt letters, painstakingly cutting out and hand sewing little felt dinosaurs, fairies and fish! Not sure I would have so much patience these days but I did love doing them.

This photo came up today as a memory. On this day three years ago I graduated from having finished the first year of my three year course. My first step into the upholstery world. I can’t believe that was only three years ago. 🤔 So much has happened since then. Fast forward to 2020 which has been a very different year for so many reasons as we all know. For me it’s also the year I will be moving in a new direction into the world of Conservation 🙌🏽. From September I’ll be starting a three year full time degree course which is very daunting but also exciting. I’ll Learning how to conserve Wood, Stone and Decorative Surfaces. Some of the processes I will be learning actually sit well alongside traditionally upholstered furniture so hopefully I can still keep my fingers in the upholstery pie 🥧

***Lockdown Home Project 1***
Modern Armchair.
I’m very happy to post photos of this finished armchair which was the first of my planned home transformations. The chair was originally covered in navy velvet for my Amusf stage 2 project but damage from cat claws and missing buttons prompted me to re-upholster it. I wasn’t sure whether to keep the button detail but I’m glad I did 👌🏽. The fabric is Pronto in Haze. Lovely to work with and stain resistant. Hope you like it 😊

Now is the time to work on those upholstery projects I have been meaning to do for ages. I have the time on my hands! So I’ve decided to upholster a second hand sofa I was given for free and my beloved velvet armchair that has unfortunately been at the mercy of our cat😩 🐈( plus I really want to change the colour). I took colour inspiration from a bunch of tulips I bought last week that were beautiful shades of purples and lilacs. I’ve also started to increase my houseplant collection so wanted something that will work well with the greenery 🌱. So the fabrics I have chosen are both from . Delta II in Stone and Pronto in a lovely two tone shade called Haze. So I’ll post the resluts as they are completed. No idea when that will be but the intentions are there😂. Stay safe💕. @ London, United Kingdom
