I am excited to say that APITTSfurniture and a small team have produced British oak chairs, used in Westminster Abbey at the King’s coronation! They can be seen covered in blue velvet, behind the St Edwards Coronation chair.
You may see this article in local news, or have heard me on local radio stations talking about the experience, but I thought I would tell it directly to the community that has allowed me to get to the stage where I was invited to work on such a commission.
“Surrey craftsman chosen to make Coronation chairs
Surrey craftsman Alex Pitts was one of only six furniture makers chosen to make 10 special congregation chairs for the King’s Coronation at Westminster Abbey this weekend.
Alex, 23, was invited by the Prince’s Foundation, which runs the Snowdon School of Furniture in its workshops at Highgrove House, to be part of a team of six former students tasked with making the chairs, which have been hand made out of British oak and upholstered with blue velvet embroidered with the cyphers of the King and Queen.
Alex, who runs his own furniture making business, APITTSfurniture, jumped at the opportunity, saying: “This project had everything going for it, traditional joinery, British timber, scenic workshops. It was a dream opportunity!”
The 10 chairs made at Highgrove were produced using traditional methods to ensure quality. “The difference between handmade and mass produced furniture is not just about strength and longevity of the piece, but also the fit and finish.
“At APITTSfurniture, I manipulate and join every part of the furniture I make, deciding every detail, including how it feels to the user and how the design fits into the space in which it will live.”
Alex offers the opportunity to learn traditional furniture making techniques at evening and weekend courses in his workshop in Edenbridge. To learn more about these classes or to see examples of the bespoke furniture he has made, please visit www.APITTSfurniture.com or follow him on Instagram .”
As always, if you require any bespoke furniture or would like to learn traditional crafts, please email me on [email protected], or visit my website: www.APITTSfurniture.com
Many thanks once again,
Alex Pitts
