When it arrived in the workshop the original wool seat on this antler framed highland throne chair was worn through. The owner wanted to use leather as a harder wearing replacement.

I used strips of the original cover to make piping and attached it to the leather which tied in nicely with the rest of the chair and managed to salvage a couple of the oversized studs to complete the reupholstery.

Great to work on such a unique piece. 😊

Just catching up sharing images of some pieces I’ve worked on at long last! This off white fabric was definitely a time for white gloves and a clean bench!

I find it really interesting when a chair offers up a bit of its history. Like when this chair was brought to me from the highlands by its owner to be reupholstered. After taking the old leather off it turned out that it had been strengthened at one point by a tea box all the way from India…!
The chair is now back up north covered in this earthy toned wool that works so well with the patina of the wood and will perfectly suit its Sutherland home.

It took 27 springs, around 15 kilos of coir to stuff and metres and metres of hand stitching to complete this traditionally upholstered chaise which was the final piece for my accreditation with the AMUSF (Association of Master Upholsterers and Soft Furnishers). ☺️ Enjoyed doing it but glad it’s done! Unfortunately no space for it here so if you know of anyone looking for a large statement piece let me know! 💖😁

A very familiar provenance..

… recovering a box last upholstered by my grandfather at least 30 years ago!

My grandad was an upholsterer and I spent a lot of time in his workshop surrounded by the smells and sounds of upholstery over the years.

So, it sparked a whole bundle of feelings when one of his former customers asked me to reupholster a little box last worked on by him…. 😊

I wish he was still here to visit me now in my wee workshop and we could drink tea (he’d prefer a whisky 😉) and we could talk chairs and upholster together.

But with ever tack I removed I was thinking of him and was sure I could feel him watching over my shoulder as I often do when I work. 😊
