I started helping out the builders and carpenters in my school holidays who were engaged in the restoration of a Grade 1 listed house and barn owned by my parents. I am sure they tolerated the annoying 12 year old as a general gofer but my interest was sparked. On leaving school I was apprenticed to Arthur Brett and Sons in Norwich as a cabinetmaker where veneer work and cabinet skills were learne
d alongside several years of City college. Our projects since then have included antique restoration and clock case manufacture , with the ongoing timber frame restorations which continued from that original house and barn.

The Fibonacci watch box - part two: cutting the fiddleback Maple segments for the first main square , you might just see the pattern faintly in pencil on my template. Time consuming fiddly stuff but good fun when it goes right !

First test panel out of ‘The Beast ‘ (veneer press ) , all good - no blisters just a tiny patch from an old dent in the platten which I will need to sand and fill .

The Beast has been wire-brushed and hoovered - dust blown off - now for some paint , black is a bit boring but it’s the original colour maybe make the wheels a bit snazzy with some colour

It’s a Stumm 16 ton veneer press just in case your unsure , yes it does need a little tlc but it is 70 odd plus years old .
