James Otter (Otter Surfboards) won Best Trainee and People’s Choice back in 2009 Fine Crafted Wood Exhibition.
His steam bent brown oak furniture greatly impressed both the judges and the public. James had been exploring making furniture using the techniques and materials used to make hollow wooden surfboards (which in themselves are inspired by traditional canoe-making), and since winning the award he has focused on wooden surfboards, going on to build a successful business and establish himself as one of the top wooden surfboard makers in the world.

Facts about timber furniture
1) Knots and joint lines are a natural property of all real wood furniture which can sometimes be visible through the painted/stained surface. This adds interest and does not affect the structural integrity of the piece.
2) Expansion and Contraction: All timber will display movement from season to season because of changes in temperature and humidity. This could effect, for example, the ease in which a drawer opens and closes, making it a little stiff. Also, give rise to timber joins expanding and contracting.
3) As timber is considered carbon-negative, it has been confirmed by a host of international scientific bodies that timber construction is an environmentally responsible way to build. Excellent.
4) Colour variations are a standard trademark of hardwoods. The outside or younger wood is lighter than the inside core where the wood is usually darker. Other colour variations are created by minerals and other elements affecting the tree's growth.
The durability and integrity of our hardwood furniture are not affected by these naturally occurring variations, in fact, these variations are exactly what most people want, giving the warmth and charm of individuality.
