The figure of the English Walnut in the armrest is so rich. The timber for the armrests and back rests were taken from an older tree and have a much darker choclolaty hue. And although the seat itself was a board taken from a much younger tree, i really love the contrast between the heartwood and the sap wood, going from coffee to caramel.

Since reading George Nakashima's The Soul of a Tree I felt inspired by how well he married finely crafted formal furniture design with the natural beauty already present in wood.

After longing after his Conoid bench I felt like putting my own spin on the design to make a chair which is more intimate and invites whomever is using it to really engage with their partner, their friend or even a stranger. Sitting down is as much about who you sit with as it is about what you sit on. This is Tête.

Last week we spent some time in Paris, a city that I had finally had the chance to explore properly.

As a furniture designer one of the must go places is Museum d’Orsay and here are just a few highlights from the collection.

The M d’O is most known for its collection of paintings of the Impressionism and Expressionism period but not everybody knows that it also hosts an incredible collection of Art nouveau furniture. You can find the work of Alexandre Charpentier, Hector Guimard and Carlo Bugatti to name but a few.

Happy World Wood Day!

Today we celebrate the fundamental importance of our forests and the wood that comes from them.

Take a moment today to reflect about our dependancy on woodlands and why it is so important to buy from sustainable resources.

One of the down sides of producing furniture is the waste. Although i do my best to reuse or repurpose as much as i can i am still always looking for ways to improve how i deal with waste.

Jahstool is an example of how we can use offcuts and transform them in lovely little pieces. For this project I used offcuts of Jatoba, Ash and Sapele which i took from the bin of a local timber yard.

Last year i spent some time studying the work of George Nakashima and Jahstool is one of the pieces I created inspired by his philosophy. Completely handmade this little stool helped me refine my handtool skills.
The seat top is Jatoba (Brazilian Cherry), the legs are Ash and the stretchers are reclaimed Sapele.

How were your holidays? We spent ours mainly here is Somerset. Despite the weather being not great we managed to go out for some nice walks. This picture is from Christmas day at Great Wood. This beautifully forest is managed by Forestry England and is famous for its Douglas Firs (Pseudotsuga menziesii), which are some of the tallest trees in England. It is quite an interesting site that makes you feel very much in a north american landscape. This majestic conifers in fact are non native species, they have been imported in Uk in 1827 by botanist David Douglas (that gives the tree name). If you are planning a visit to the Quantock Hills this site is a must see!
