Re. Xmas tree post 30 Dec 2025.2
So our Christmas tree selling time is over and those trees remaining are breathing a sigh of relief!
Firstly to thank all of our “Guests” for coming to our farm this year, both old customers and many new ones. We very much appreciated your interest and kind support. A busy time for us but so good to meet up with you all after so long, to hear how your year has been and to update you over what has been happening at our little Lodge in Ethiopia.
The weather has been quite kind for us all, though frosty or snowy trees would have been great! Previous years had given our trees the look of Narnia.
There were a few muddy bottoms coming down the slippery slope and even more sticky faces from the melted marshmallows but I think everyone enjoyed themselves, and the Lucky Dip didn’t run out!
Almost the New Year which we really hope will be good for you all and for the World, and now Selas and I have to plan how we balance the management of our trees with the journey back to our Lodge.
As for our trees we have to replant some of the gaps, not only with baby Norway Spruce but also some Grand Fir natural regeneration, moved from under a big “Mother” tree. Other young trees that have been “engulfed” by dominant neighbours, will also have to be relocated to give them a future. Not all the gaps will be replanted with Christmas trees since we plan to gradually enrich the area with indigenous tree and shrub species, such as Oak, Beech, Hazel, Holly, Field Maple, Ash etc.
While we have always had problems with Rabbits and Roe Deer, during this last year we had new visitors in the form of Muntjac Deer, which while being fascinating they have done a lot of damage to young trees by stripping the bark when scratching the velvet off their little antlers. This has meant and will mean more tree guards and more replacement seedlings. Such is life!
OK, all for now, and just once again to say thank you and to wish you all the very best in 2026.
If you are passing please call in for a chat and a coffee!
Selas, Katrina and Mike
