The spring batch is finally done and ready to ship. Calore, Artifex, and ? “Amoeba” seems like an apt moniker.

One aspect of my contribution to guitar making has been to revisit designs of the past, and find out what makes them tick. As many of you know, James D’Aquisto is a favorite of mine, and cultivating an understanding of his “tweeters and woofers” double soundholes has been an important part of my practice these last 6 months - ultimately, I think I’m a fan.

Not one to disappoint, here’s a short bench video of the 3. Amazingly, the little blue one stays in perfect tune over 3 octaves.

If you’re in southern France the last week of May, try to drop by the temple de Puech in Bouquet, for a bit of classical and acoustic jazz played by Pierre Henri Xuereb (viola) Ruixin Niu (violin) and Adrien Giovaninetti (guitars). They’re covering quite the musical gamut (from Paganini to Grappelli), and will feature a few of my instruments. I may even make a short speech - hoping to see you there…

I know I’ve been talking about modernizing the Broadway a bit lately, but after completing this latest instrument, I’ve decided to leave things as they are. The 16” straight braced varnished guitar is a pinnacle of design, and thus it shall remain. Sorry for the poor cropping on the photos - I blame instagram.

Another Jazz Special shipping out today. This one without a finger rest, and featuring a floating humbucker from Pete Biltoft, one of the last in my possession. Next on the bench for setup will be the varnished Broadway, then the trio of modern guitars. A busy springtime in the shop…

A few posts back I said something about the colours of spring - here they are, in full bloom. There’s green, blue, red - just about everything in there. I’m really looking forward to playing this lovely bouquet in a few weeks time.

All my lacquer/colour work is done for this batch, now I’m taking the time to do one the old fashioned way. This Broadway will be varnished and French polished, and the sunburst built up by hand. A classy guitar, done in a classy way, for a classy old friend.

Finishing time again … the colours of spring will adorn these new models in a week or so, here’s a quick post to let clients and friends know where I’m currently at. Still honing in on the Calore design - the first two shots are of a guitar which will be available for sale when finished. The guitar is being made for a guitar/cello/viola concert series this may, after that, first reasonable offer takes the instrument home. The second and third shots are variations on my revised Artifex design, both of these guitars are already spoken for. I’ll post a few more shots once the colours go on.

Newly completed, just off the bench. These two have been under string tension a few days now, and are starting to come to life. The first is my latest Continental, then something new - I’ve been wanting to do a somewhat simpler guitar for a while, block inlays, a bit less binding - thus “Estelle” was born. This guitar will be featured in a concert series in various local venues this spring, more on that in future updates.

Working late tonight, fueled by an advance copy of new album - watch out for this one, an hour’s worth of music that will push you to new creative heights - or just put you back in touch with the physical reality of music, my favorite art. Good job, Will. And thank you, my friend.

A milestone slated for next year, I have now begun my 200th carved guitar. It’s taken a while to reach this one - around 28 years, I suppose. This will be something special - a new version of the “Artifex” model, a tilt of the hat to the past, and with a strong view to the future. I’ll also be making a Calore in this batch, which will be available for immediate sale when completed. Happy New Year to you all - and Here’s to another quarter century….
