Ira Stehmann Fine Art

The focus of her work lies on photography. Her strength lies in conceptual work and the selection, evaluation and documentation of artworks.

For more than 25 years Ira Stehmann has been an adviser and mediator for contemporary art, liaising with both private and institutional collectors and individual customers. In the course of her career she has traced, evaluated, acquired, archived and documented thousands of photographs as well as arranging the resale of works. As a freelance exhibition curator and experienced specialist in the art

market Ira Stehmann advises private collectors, museums and companies. She has been working in this capacity, for example for the Nicola Erni Collection, since the beginning of the new millennium. She has built up a private library of several hundred art books, with a particular emphasis on publications in the field of photography. Ira Stehmann has edited and co-edited numerous works on contemporary photography that have been brought out by renowned art publishers. Ira Stehmann has excellent contacts to museums, private collectors and artists’ estates in New York, London and Paris and has been managing the estate of Jeanloup Sieff in Paris since the early 2000s. In addition, she has been the sole representative for the works of the well-known photographer Chistopher Thomas since 2007. She has been an adviser and provided exhibition concepts for companies such as Credit Suisse (Germany) AG, Frankfurt/Munich, Allianz AG, Munich, Hypo Vereinsbank, Munich, Paul Hartmann AG, Heidenheim, The Nicola Erni Collection, Argos Beteiligungsverwaltung GmbH, Munich, KBB Verwaltungs-GmbH, Böblingen, Richter & Partner, Munich/Frankfurt/Stuttgart, Get Mobile AG, Munich, Boston Consulting Group, Hamburg/Munich, and Truffle Bay Management Consulting, Munich, among many others. Ira Stehmann studied at a number of different European institutions: Art History in London and Munich, Business Management at the European Business School (EBS) in Oestrich-Winkel, London and Paris, as well as semesters studying in Florence and Parma. After working at an auctioneers, she became freelance in 1993. Between 2001 and 2010 Ira Stehmann was a partner at curators GmbH in Munich.

We are delighted to announce our participation in PHOTO BASEL 2026, taking place from 16–21 June 2026 at Volkshaus Basel, parallel to Art Basel. Since its founding in 2015, PHOTO BASEL has established itself as the most important fair dedicated exclusively to photography in the German-speaking world, a place where historic positions, contemporary voices, and international perspectives come together in dialogue.

At Booth A1, we will exhibit works by Steffen Diemer, Corina Gertz, Frank Horvat, Peter Lindbergh, Vivian Maier, Norman Parkinson, Franco Rubartelli, Christopher Thomas, and Max Vadukul.

The presentation will bring together very different photographic approaches, united by a shared sensibility for atmosphere, craftsmanship, memory, and visual storytelling. From iconic fashion photography to deeply contemplative contemporary works, the selection reflects the wide artistic spectrum photography can encompass today.

We are very much looking forward to returning to Basel and to sharing this carefully curated presentation with collectors, curators, photography enthusiasts, and friends of the gallery.

What does elegance truly mean in photography?
With our current exhibition “Ode to Elegance & Allure” we bring together eight photographers who each answer this question in a radically different way:

For some, elegance emerges through mastery of composition, light, and staging. Milton Greene created portraits of timeless intimacy and grace, while William Helburn combined fashion, humor, and cinematic tension into images full of movement and sophistication. Steven Meisel transformed fashion photography into a culturally defining visual language: precise, provocative, and unmistakably of its time.

Others reject perfection altogether. Peter Lindbergh radically shifted fashion photography toward authenticity and humanity, while Max Vadukul’s grainy, energetic images break with conventional ideals of beauty entirely. Their works reveal that elegance can also arise from rawness, spontaneity, and disruption.

Elsewhere, elegance appears more quietly. Elliott Erwitt finds it in humor and the poetry of everyday life. Simon Chaput reduces body and landscape into luminous lines and abstract sensuality. Christopher Thomas creates cityscapes that feel less like documents and more like distant memories, suspended between stillness, longing, and time.

“Ode to Elegance & Allure” invites viewers into a dialogue between glamour and intimacy, movement and stillness, timelessness and transformation, revealing photography as a medium capable of capturing the fragile beauty of both elegance and impermanence.

We are delighted to announce our current exhibition
ODE TO ELEGANCE & ALLURE
at Ira Stehmann Fine Art.

What creates allure in an image? What gives a photograph elegance that remains long after the first glance?
Bringing together works by Simon Chaput, Christopher Thomas, Milton H. Greene, William Helburn, Steven Meisel, Elliott Erwitt, Peter Lindbergh, and Max Vadukul, the exhibition explores these questions through eight singular artistic perspectives.

Moving between fashion photography, portraiture, atmospheric cityscapes, and abstracted body landscapes, the exhibition reveals elegance not as a fixed aesthetic, but as something deeply personal and ever-changing: sometimes glamorous and cinematic, sometimes raw and immediate, sometimes quiet, sensual, or profoundly human.

Though their artistic approaches could hardly be more different, all eight photographers are united by a common sensibility: the understanding that true elegance does not arise from perfection alone, but from atmosphere, emotion, restraint, and presence.

2026 has come to an end, and we return to Munich with many new impressions, inspiring encounters, and memorable moments from the past days in London.
This year’s presentation brought together works by , , , , , , and Miriam Tölke (._art); a constellation of artistic voices that opened up dialogues around memory, identity, perception, craftsmanship, and the poetic potential of photography.

We are particularly proud of the presentation we created this year–one that reflected our passion for photography as an artistic medium of depth, emotion, and enduring relevance. Every detail of the booth was carefully considered, and it was incredibly rewarding to see how strongly the works resonated within the setting we envisioned.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who visited us, supported us, and made these days in London so special. From collectors and curators to artists, friends, and long-time companions of the gallery, it was wonderful to see so many people engaging deeply with the works and responding with such openness and curiosity.

And the journey continues: Next stop — Photo Basel 2026

As draws to a close, we invite you once more to experience our presentation, featuring works by , , , , , and ._art — each reflecting on memory, perception, and the many ways photography can shape how we see the world.

In this final moment, we would like to draw special attention to Steffen Diemer. His works, created using the historic wet plate collodion technique on black glass, are not only images but physical objects: intimate, tactile, and deeply contemplative.
Diemer’s artistic path, from documenting crisis regions to turning inward toward a more poetic and spiritual exploration of the natural world, lends his work a profound sensitivity. Each piece invites us to slow down, to look closely, and to reconnect with the beauty found in the most delicate and fleeting forms.

Perhaps that is what a fair like Photo London ultimately offers: not just images, but moments of reflection and new ways of seeing.

There are few photographic discoveries as extraordinary as that of Vivian Maier.
A nanny by profession, Maier spent decades documenting the streets of New York and Chicago; quietly, intensely, and entirely without seeking recognition. What she left behind is an archive containing more than 150,000 negatives, colour slides, Super 8 films and audio recordings: a deeply human portrait of everyday life in the second half of the 20th century.
Her photographs capture fleeting moments with remarkable sensitivity: gestures, encounters, fragments of urban existence that might otherwise have gone unnoticed.

At Photo London 2026, we are proud to present a selection of her works, as well as other works by Albarrán Cabrera, Steffen Diemer, Corina Gertz, Marcus Schaefer, Christopher Thomas and Miriam Tölke – each offering perspectives that resonate with clarity, empathy, and timeless relevance.

As we prepare for Photo London, we are excited to present the work of Albarrán Cabrera, a duo that continuously expands what photography can be.
For Anna Cabrera and Ángel Albarrán, the photograph does not end with the image. Their works are carefully crafted objects, created through complex and often self-developed printing techniques. Gold leaf, Japanese paper, pigments, and historic processes come together to form images that are as much about materiality as they are about perception.
Their practice explores the fragile boundary between reality and imagination, inviting each viewer to complete the image through their own memories and experiences.

We look forward to bringing these unique works to London and to sharing their quiet complexity with you!

In the lead-up to Photo London, we are delighted to introduce Corina Gertz, whose art redefines what a portrait can be.
Until two weeks ago, we had the pleasure of presenting a solo exhibition of her work at our gallery, an experience that deeply resonated with us and our visitors alike. Now, we are excited to bring her work to an international audience at Photo London.

In her long-term project The Averted Portrait, Gertz turns her subjects away from the camera. What remains visible is not the individual face, but the language of clothing. Textiles that carry memory, identity, and cultural knowledge across generations.
Her photographs invite a different kind of looking: slower, more attentive, more open. They speak of belonging, heritage, and the quiet dignity of traditions that continue to shape our present.

We are very pleased to present her work at Photo London 2026 and to share this remarkable perspective with you.

Photo London is slowly approaching, and we are already looking forward to returning to one of the most exciting gatherings of international photography.

This year, among Albarrán Cabrera, Steffen Diemer, Corina Gertz, Vivian Maier, Marcus Schaefer, and Miriam Tölke, we will be presenting a carefully curated selection of works by Christopher Thomas, whose practice moves between poetic stillness and emotional depth. Only recently, we travelled to the South of France for the opening of the exhibition "Présence" and now, we are already excited to bring his work to London.

At Photo London, we will show works from his series “Bittersweet” and “Eternity”: two bodies of work that reflect on time, memory, and the fragile traces we leave behind. Whether through deserted places of childhood longing or weathered artificial flowers found on graves, Thomas’ images resonate with a quiet yet powerful emotional intensity.

We look forward to sharing these works with you in London. See you there in May! 🫶🏻
